When do the ski resorts start hiring?!

Id really like to work in one of the ski resorts over the winter...just wondered when they start looking to recruit people? Ideally id like to work in Crans-Montana or Champery as theyre both near me. Im only just learning French too so only really speak English, is this going to pose a massive problem?! Thanks, Laura

I would start by looking at which languages they speak in the areas you want to work in, and get started learning them. Probably couldn't hurt to take a first aid course as well, or something to add to your skill set.

Good luck.

Re: When do the ski resorts start hiring?!

yes thats a good idea...all the resorts near me are French speaking and I have started to teach myself the basics online. First Aid course is something to think about!
Thanks

Re: When do the ski resorts start hiring?!

My family's place in Champery is let through an estate agent next to the Co op in the centre of the village.
It might be worth asking them what the drill is for finding seasonal work, and looking at the Co op's notice board, where seasonal work is sometimes advertised.
I would also really concentrate on learning French whilst you're not working because, although there are many English speakers in Champery during the ski season, anyone working there would normally be expected to speak at least very basic French.
You haven't said what it is you're hoping to work at, but I know that to be a ski instructor you'll need to be an excellent skier and speak good French. The Swiss Ski school only employs Swiss instructors, so you'd need to contact one of the UK ski specialists and, even then, I'm pretty sure they would expect you to speak basic French.

You could start looking at Champéry. On the ski map, here, it gives you the name of the restaurant when you move the mouse over it. There are also several hotels in the village.

Re: When do the ski resorts start hiring?!

I have friends who run a ski Company (based in Greenwich) in Torgon - their ski pass includes Torgon, Chatel, super Chatel, Morgins and Champoussin-Les Crosets (Champéry). They will be hiring soon for the 2011-2012 season and they only work with British schools and clients- so no French necessary. Al the staff are young Kiwis, Ossies and Brits - great fun, great atmosphere. You'd have plenty of time to ski and snowboard, and all staff get free hire and passes - free board and lodgings, but wages are very low.

Get in touch with Gerry (the owner), Becky or Ollie

While I favour self-teaching whenever I want to start learning a new language, in your case you may benefit more from taking a crash course, I think.

Migros schools offer intensive courses (5 days a week, 3 hours a day, for one month) at reasonable prices. It would help you achieve a basic command of the language as needed in the typical situations in which you will find yourself in your job.

Also, as a native English speaker you could offer "language exchange" sessions (your English for French from a local French-speaking Swiss). Try posting on messages boards such as those at your local Coop, Migros, Manor, etc, or even here in the language corner sub-forum.

Good luck!
