Recruitment consultants - how to get a reply??

Hello, I have recently moved from London to Basel and while I have a job currently I have been trying to reach out to recruitment consultants in Zurich to explore opportunities there.

I am trying to set up initial meetings to discuss my options, potential opportunities. I have emailed, called and left messages but am not receiving any replies, what am I doing wrong??

Any help and advice appreciated.

Andy

Good luck, they are worse here than the London/UK CV farmers.

Is it acceptable here to turn up on their doorstep and ask to speak to someone?

In short: No.

Reading your post do I get the impression that you are not getting their job at all: They are "consultants", but they don't at all consult YOU - they consult the companies that pay them. They will not find you a job - the find people for a role at a customer.

So the only way to deal with them is to send them a well formatted CV - I hope you know the differences between the UK CVs and Swiss ones, otherwise we probably found the source of your problem... (just search the forum, you will find everything on Swiss CVs here). Send out the CV to as many as possible to end up in their databases. As soon as they have a job that matches your profile, they will call you.

My experience is that more than half are a complete waste of time. If you want a job and you want it in the next three months - apply directly at companies that interest you.

Yep, whatever line they spin you, you are just a commodity to them and if your skillset fits an open position, they contact you.

I would try contacting firms in your field directly. As Treverus says, get your CV up to Swiss standard and fire it out with a great motivation letter.

We recruited a few people from a direct application (or referral from a company source). It's favourable in most cases because there are no fees to pay to a third party.

Good luck.

Alternatively, why not post some more information about your skills and what sort of work you are looking for and maybe some people from Zürich can already give you some suggestions.

Have you tried contacting an agency called Stamford Consultants? They have offices in Basel and Zurich and recruit for IT, Pharma and Finance. Additionally they reverse market good candidates, so you don't have to match an open position to be of interest. I would get your CV in shape and send them an email!

Re: Recruitment consultants - how to get a reply??

It's box pushing (and you're the box) so sell yourself correctly with an impeccable CV and recommendations. Consider you're competing against maybe 100 other CVs or more (depending on your profession) so you've got to stand out.
Though it is not a regular anglo-saxon practice, I would really suggest to add recommendations of former employers as well as accomplishments with a personalized cover letter specifically for that industry/area.
Hope it works out for you
