Administrative Assistant NGO Geneva

Hi everyone, I'm new in this forum, I already read some thread and used the salary calculators, but still have some doubts ... Does anyone know how much I should ask for a position as Administrative Assistant with an NGO in Geneva?

Thank you in advance!

It's quite probable that the NGO already have the salary for that position defined. Most of the time it is listed in the ad for the position. It the salary isn't then the grade or range should be indicated. At least that's how I understand it from UN type NGOs. Not just a simple non-profit organization.

Re: Administrative Assistant NGO Geneva

Thanks MiniMia, but not, this non-profit organization asked me for an interview, and they want that I tell them my salary expectations. For the info I found I should ask around 5500 CHF a month, but I was wondering if this is exaggerated, but maybe I'm not really aware about the cost of living in Geneva ... UN is another stuff, their salary are really good, even better than the private sector.

A well, a regular non-profit, then yes.

It's always tough to be the first to say what you expect. But I'd go with a yearly figure not monthly. 70K seems good to me.

Non-profits generally pay lower salaries. Have you not found any salary calculator for an admin assistant?

Re: Administrative Assistant NGO Geneva

Whichever figure you are asking for be careful re. the gross or net figure. Many NGOs in Geneva have a tax deal with the Swiss whereby their staff don't necessarily pay the full swiss equivalent in taxes/social charges, yet it is not as good as the full UN exemption. When discussing salary clarify the tax situation, as it could make all the difference in the world.

Thanks everyone! Well, the calculator says CHF 5600/6500 monthly. Of course I will ask also about the tax situation.

Re: Administrative Assistant NGO Geneva

I don't know if this is good advice for Switzerland or not, but when I've researched salary negotiation in the past some general rules were:

-don't name a figure, let them do so first
-you can say that you would prefer not to talk about salary until there is an actual job offer and they are sure that you are the candidate that is best for the position
-if forced, you could say something like, "I would expect to be paid a fair market value salary for an administrative assistant in a non-profit based in Geneva." Usually the fair market value can be found and knowledge is power (though I haven't looked up these kinds of numbers in Switzerland) That shows you value your work, and expect fairness.
-If they really push you for a number, ask for higher than you think, so you can go down if you need to, and give the impression you are flexible
-don't forget to factor other benefits: health insurance, holidays, etc.

Good luck!

Re: Administrative Assistant NGO Geneva

just to confirm what everyone said re asking for a "fair market price" if they push you.

However, one thing is that NGO salaries are lower than private sector salaries, and Geneva salaries are lower than those in Lausanne and MUCH lower than those in Zurich Zug.

For an administrative position, I would negotiate around 6000-6500 and accept 5500 for a job in Geneva. If you get offered something in Lausanne, bump it up to a hard 6000...in Zurich, even higher...

BlancheNeige has made some interesting contributions
Re: Administrative Assistant NGO Geneva

I've just interviewed for a position with a large Geneva-based NGO, they're offering the equivalent of 4800 CHF full time for a research/programme assistant job. I don't know if I'll be successful but, frankly, it's just not enough as my entire earnings would go on child care.

Re: Administrative Assistant NGO Geneva

based on researching regarding salaries for admin assistants and the like I found out that it's really around 6000chf per month (at least in the German-speaking part) and I don't know why some companies offer even less than 4500chf... are they aware of these average salaries?
