It's just another function driving shareholder value thus supporting cost reductions and other initiatives if needed. I've always described HR as a mix of purchasing/manufacturing/supply chain but then focused on people rather than products: getting right quantity/quality of "resources" at the right cost. | | | | | You will allow me a bit of irony, but now I understand better what is what we euphemistically call Human resources...

call them up. if you let them know that you're also interviewing, it can hurry things along since if they want you, they'll have to snap you up before somebody else does.

HR don't really seem to do an awful lot, yet get a nice fat salary for the, ahem, effort.

If it is a large multi-national company there could be a lot of reasons that they have not gotten back to you-none of them having to do you as many other posters have said.
I interviewed at a large multi-national company and they told me it was going to be a while before I heard because they had to leave the job posting up for a certain amount of time (4 weeks) before they could hire anyone. If they leave it up for 4 weeks, then interview and make a decision then it could be a while.
I always ask when they are going to make a decision and when the job starts so I know. Twice I have had trips planned right around the start date so it was good to know.

Aren't they just overpaid admin-monkeys? | | | | | Ours always seemed to be off on 'training' junkets. Since we never saw them except occasionally at all-hands meetings where they'd put on the smiley-happy face and explain how the latest benefits cut was actually a great thing for you, one is left to wonder if the 'training' was in things unrelated to benefitting the employees, e.g.: how to cut 10% of your workforce without a riot, how to use office furniture to protect the executive suite, new phrases for "You're fired" etc etc.
The one we have here is like a one-woman police force: enforcing her unwritten rules on the helpless populace including such things as 'tsk-ing' about your clothing or your slouching and terrorizing the managers to make sure that all hands show up at all events organized by her and that might reflect poorly on her if half the staff stayed in their offices and tried to get work done instead.
