Job offer in Basel / good deal?

Hi All,

In short, I've been offered a job in Basel (in pharma) and wondering if this is a good move and have some questions about permits etc. -

- I am Australian, 29, my career is in pharma (project manager)
- I have been offered a job in Basel with the same company I work with in Australia (I have 6.5 years service in Australia), however, the role is a contract role - 12 months to start - and employed by a consultant agency and would thus lose all current benefits of my current role and therefore no re-location package although they have said they will find me accommodation for arrival
- Career wise it is a good move into a global role
- They are offering 100CHF/hr, which I have been informed I will get 10,000CHF a month post tax
- They are currently in the process of compiling the application for the permit - after it is lodged this week, they have stated they will hear back within 1-2 weeks whether it would be approved
- If approved, hoping I will start in November

Is this a good move? Good money?

Also regarding the permit application, I thought you couldn't start working until you actually had the permit which from what I have read can take minimum 1-2 months (or 2-4 months according to the Swiss Embassy website)?

Any feedback, especially regarding the permit process, would be much appreciated!!

Re: Job offer in Basel / good deal?

Hi Cakes

Its a lot of money NET to be making a month (presuming you are meaning after tax) - its even a good take home to be making before tax.

It sounds like its just you (no mention of any partner or family) so the good take home pay will more than compensate for the lack of relocation package.

I would rather say its more down to you, and the idea of job security in the current world climate vs. increased career prospects and the chance to relocate for 12 months.

Try looking at the great stickies at the top of the employment thread. There have also been quite a few similar questions regarding salaries in the last couple of weeks and they all (to my recollection) have been for less money and for a family, so you can take it from that that unless you have an extremely extravagant lifestyle, the money side is not the bit you need to be thinking about.

If you enjoy an adventure, the outdoors, the mountains, visiting Europe, making new friends and progressing your career at the same time, I'd say it must be a very tempting offer.

Re: Job offer in Basel / good deal?

Thanks ecb for the quick reply!

It is just me and I certainly am very keen. I have had a look at the stickies, particularly all the ones about permit's.

The one thing I can't seem to find anywhere is whether you can start work with just the 'pre-authorisation' or whether you have to wait for the permit once you arrive..?

Thanks again

Re: Job offer in Basel / good deal?

10,000 CHF/month post tax is more than enough, even for a couple or a family. Yes, the process of visa approval could take up to 2 months (my case in 2009-2010).
You are lucky to get a position in Swiss at the moment because there are lots & lots of people coming to Swiss (due to EU economy problems).

It's only 1 year contract? A bit too short if think about number of all the relocations to do..

Basel is nice and quite international (well, do not compare with the big 3 cities in Australia

Good luck.
Nesta.

Re: Job offer in Basel / good deal?

Try posting in the permit section with your specific question? There are a couple of really knowledgeable contributors on that part of the forum. Alas I cannot help as we are EU. I think many people are put off looking at threads with a title like this as they feel there is lots of information out there already, so best not to hide a permit question in with salaries. You will see we get asked A LOT of salary questions!

But as I have said, feel the salary issue is a red herring as you will be fine with that sort of salary.

Have you visited CH before? Do you know anything much about the country? What do you like doing? Certainly the Basel area is a better for younger people than other areas I could think of , but it is unfortunately a bit of hike to the Big Proper Mountains.

Good luck with the decision.

Hey congratulaitons on the offer . You are really lucky
Moneywise you can have a high standart here. Basel is really nice.

With regards to your permit, I do not think you can start working without the permit. You can have a contract but without the permit you would not be able to work. Just try to push the agency who has submitted for your permit to arrange it asap.

Good luck

Please go and peruse the endless threads on ''I make x amount...is this enough to live?''. There's no need to look for further reassurances when it's quite obvious that it's enough for you to live on.

Re: Job offer in Basel / good deal?

I personally will check that whether I have a job to go back to after 12 months regardless of what you get paid. It is good to move in Global market but if at the end of the contract, you have no job and lost of service to the company, the money now might not sound too good in a long run.

also, you are coming a long way for 12 months, so if things don't work out, you are seriously out of pocket in month 1-3. Can you afford to go back home and hunt for work again?

If this is a internal posting, then I will say go for it but since it looks as if you are resigning your currently perm post and take up contract, then I will be a bit more careful.

Good luck.

How can anyone be so grumpy on such a glorious day in Basel.

WHilst cycling home from training this morning, I saw people swimming down the Rhine, an Italian market and music in Barfusserplatz, plus lots of poeple out enjoying the sunny cafes. Not to mention knowing about the pumpkin festival ( try the coffee with schnapps and cream

Basel is a lovely place to live.

Re: Job offer in Basel / good deal?

100 CHF an hour. Net or gross? Will you be paid if you are off sick? Will you get holiday pay? Will you get a contribution towards your pension.
If the 100CHF is gross and the answers to these 3 questions is no, then it is not a very good deal. You could live ok but unless you particularly want to come to Basel then I wouldn't take it.

I wouldn't say CHF100p/h is great money for Basel/Pharma/project manager, however, if you get what you want by way of experience, seeing a bit of Europe etc, then it's ok. Take a look on Jobserve or Monster for a comparison.

The important thing (As well as Rambo's questions) is the PER HOUR. Most contracts/consultancies are offering a rate PER DAY. Or is it a daily rate based on 8 hours per day?
My experience of big Pharma in Basel is they get their pound of flesh and then some. You're more likely to be touching 10 hours per day than 8.

I wouldn't come this far without a permit. Whilst the likes of Novartis and Roche can make assurances about you getting one, the consultancies like Wipro or Infosys can not.

Why won't your company relocate you themselves?

Re: Job offer in Basel / good deal?

Thanks for everyone's thoughts and info - decided not to take it as a secondment for the same role in London came up. They have however left it an open offer in the event I change my mind.

Thanks again!

I'm very surprised you chose London over Basel!!! The offer you had in Basel sounded super!

What made you choose London? That you can go back to your previous job??

As Rambo has pointed out, no holiday pay, no sick pay, no pension contributions, all costs born by the OP, resign a perfectly good job is Sydney, become basically a temporary worker (for that is the life of a contractor), become underpaid for that position (pharma pay the counsultancy twice what the OP would receive), etc, etc.

Keeps the job, all costs (moving, flights, accomodation) born by the company, living in one of the best/liveliest cities in the world, easy and cheap flights to the rest of Europe, everyone speaks English, etc, etc.

London has so much to offer a young single person. This is not the easiest country to fit in socially (with the locals I mean)
