Illness or vacation day

Hi, does anyone know under Swiss labor law, if you have a sick nanny and need to stay home, is this a sick day for work or can you be asked to take it as a vacation day?

Thanks

Re: Illness or vacation day

The companies I have worked for here have generally been sympathetic to this kind of situation, especially if you offer to keep an eye on your email from time to time from home while looking after your child, or agree to call in by phone at least for the important bits of any meetings you may have scheduled. In my own experience it has always been an informal one-off agreement between employee and manager though.

Check your contract to see if there is anything specified there. I have seen it written in contracts that exceptional paid time off (i.e. not vacation) can be granted for x days per year in the event of a child being sick.

I don't know what the law says though, if anything.

Re: Illness or vacation day

According to the law you can be asked to take the day off, because it's not your child being ill. You would be granted up to three days provided you can prove the illness of your child with a "Arztzeugnis". (ArG, Art. 36)
However, most bigger companies do have regulations more in favour of the employee. Ask your HR department.
