considering moving to Switzerland from melbourne

Hi all,

We are considering moving to Switzerland. My husband has Doctorate in mechanical engineering and I am artist and graphic designer. We also have 2 small kids.

Can anyone shed some light, how expensive is to live there. What is renting or buying 3 bedroom apartments like? Food and normal expenses……. Just to give as an idea.

Tax for foreigners > I would appreciate as much practical info as you can give me.

Where in Switzerland is important. - expense and your experience is likely to be different depending on where you live. Zurich and Geneva have the highest cost of living, but also the higest salaries usually.

Have you thought about work permit situation? Unless you can claim an EU passport you will have to find an employer who will apply for a work permit, and show that you or your husband have skills which can't be filled within Switzerland or the EU.

Taxation for foreigners isn't usually a big problem. I don't think you will pay any more tax than locals, however the collection of it is different (your employer deducts it from you salary every month).

What do you want to get out of life? Switzerland is a safe, family friendly country with lots of outdoor activities and travel opportunities within Europe. However it is not as diverse or exciting as many larger countries.

thanks

I have no clue. There is a job that he will apply for, but it doesn’t give us name or anything like that.
Says Remuneration
1450 - 1850 CHF a day plus travel expenses which sounds very nice.

I need safe and friendly place, it doesn’t have to be city but my sons are 5 and 4, reasonable schools and we do not want to loose our family.
I am versatile and quite successful s artist, but worked in the newspaper as designer and love doing that.
I am reading this forum, but no clue what is the situation on permits or what do we need to have to work and live there. I can see many different types and a bit confusing.
We have Australian passports. Our dream is to be in Europe and to experience that lifestyle, but as having kids is quite a lot of work, we are aware of financial burdens...i am now trying to do important research so we can at least have an idea. How far are smaller places from cities?

We travel now an hour to get to see friends. It is pretty busy in Melbourne...what is good salary for 4 people?

Hello There,
With regards to housing, renting would be a lot easier. Its a bit of troublesome for foreigners to purchase property here. But its not impossible.

Regards,
Tizoc

This sounds like a contract position rather than a permanent job. Your husband will need to find an 'employer' to apply for the work permit and run a payroll - some agents offer this as an expensive service.

On such a rate you would have no problems living well in Switzerland.

Don't forget that if your husband gets a work permit you will accompnay him on a dependants permit - you will not be allowed to work unless you also find an employer to sponsor your work permit.

Just returned from Perth to France, but very, very close to the CH border. In answer to your question, the cost of living is extremely high: AUD3.50 for a loaf of bread and AUD40.00 for reasonable quality meat. Rents high too. Travelling easy, quick and reliable. Education good. Possible xenophobia somewhat difficult to deal with if you don't speak the language.
