has anyone ever heard of an HR accepting a back-dated notice period (say, there was verbal heads-up ~a month before the formal written notice)? or accepting a mutually agreed upon shorter notice period?
Mutually agreed shortened period is possible - I've had that discussion. But You'll have to sell it, as in it's also good for the company and that your transition to your replacement will be thorough and of the highest Swiss quality. Given the current economic environment, I'd play up how you are saving the company money as well. Good luck!

it was more like, "I have an offer, I'm probably going to take it... I'm just waiting to hear about something."
The "probably" is the killer here, I'm afraid. If you didn't hear about the other one, and they terminated your employment as a result of that conversation, would you have regarded that as reasonable?

I have a friend who signed an agreement to shorten the notice period, but it's up to the employer to let you go before.

'Probably' is your problem you were not going to leave regardless.
