I will be starting to work in Geneva, for an international organization, on a so-called P4 position. I will have a 2+2y contract which will likely become permanent.
BTW rich boy I hope you are sure of your employer's health status. The WHO is laying off 300-600 staff this and next year, for example. "Permanent" contracts are not that permanent anylonger at international organisations..

Hello All,

I have discovered this very useful forum which has provided me with lots of information so far.

I will be starting to work in Geneva, for an international organization, on a so-called P4 position. I will have a 2+2y contract which will likely become permanent.

My salary will be around 150K CHF net, this means (internal) tax + health insurance + pension fund already deducted. I have been told this corresponds to some 200K CHF gross.

I need to live in Switzerland (Geneva, or Vaud) for tax reasons (there is no tax agreement with France). My wife will look for a job but this is reportedly difficult with her education and professional experience. I have a 10y old daughter who will go to the international school, my employer covers 80% of the school fees.

Is 150K CHF net OK for this region and as a newcomer (no existing rent, not owning real estate)? Does it really correspond to 200K gross?

What about the real estate market. I have some investments which could be used for a 20% deposit in order to buy a flat or a house somewhere in the region, but not sure this is a good idea right now.

Cheers.
How did you come up with CHF150,000 net income on a P-4 salary??? Do you have a gaggle of dependents?

Perhaps it is just another wind-up?
If it is not, it is a particularly insensitive first post int he current circumstances- when many here are struggling on 40.000 gross and less. I know many people who earn that sort of money, and they usually have the decent common sense to be a bit discreet about this.
I don't think it is insentive - although I was always taught that talking salary was crass, I do accept that this doesn't apply to all cultures - you earn what you earn and if you earn more than others so be it. I don't feel bad that I earn more than someone working in a shoe shop or serving me my coffee in a cafe, as two random examples.

What it does show to me, however, is a level of ignorance that would not necessarily be associated with a 200k salary...

On the far end but I guess it's within reason.

What do you expect? .... you may be used to minions doing your research, but contributors here are less forgiving.

Maybe Switzerland doesn't need so many high-flyers, who don't know on which side their bread is buttered.

I just hope that there aren't too many Swiss reading threads such as this - it's enough to make anyone vote SVP.

Lay off fellas, we were all new here once. You can research on google as much as you want, but you don't really learn anything useful until you get here. Don't forget, this is the only thing that keeps EF going, this condensed knowledge.

He's earning a decent wage, not really his fault, but I'm sure he's had to put the time in to get into his position.

Cut the jealousy, cut him some slack, and be helpful, or ignore him.

My 2 cents worth, 150k should be plenty, even with family in Geneva, enjoy.

A small search in the forum will reveal that 120k is more than enough. It will also reveal lists provided by useful users on how much certain professions usually earn in this country.

This has nothing to do with jealousy.

Same way the hounds are released when someone doesn't bother using the search bar when they ask for brown sugar, it's understandable that people have the same reaction to any question that has been asked 100 times before (though on the range of 120k).

People took the question with a laugh. They answered the question with a sarcastic: "yes, it's more than enough". Because it's also common sense. The OP had his answer on the very first posts, albeit marinated in sarcasm.

I have no problem helping people that don't know this country, but I still reserve the right to treat all newbies the same way: use the search function.

Cost of living - help needed to get it right

For example.

Re: 150K net (200K gross) in Geneva?

Rent & parking 5000-6000/month
Car insurance = 200/month
Health insurance for the rest of the family if not covered = 500-700/month
Other insurances = 100/month
Train tickets 100/person/month = 300/month
Food (2 * lunch 50 and groceries 50) 100 per day = 3000/month
Dining out once a week a 250 for 3 ppl = 1000/month
School fees=?

TOTAL ~ 11K.

You still have 3-4K to spend at your choosing. Or you can choose to live cheaper and save about 50% of this.

It's like a race to see who can get in first with the most sarcastic comment, it really is a shame and is a major downside to what is a very helpful and interesting forum.

We were all new once and just because someone is earning 200k does not mean to say they know how to use a forum, everyone has to start somewhere.
The guy is probably excited, nervous, unsure and looking for some friendly advice, that’s all, I am sure you have all done the same at some point.
Simple thing to do would be ignore and then admin can point them to the instruction on how to use the forum.

You never know this guy might have had a lot to add to the forum and because of all the sarcastic replies from the usual suspects he will probably not be back.

It really is a shame.

Cue the groans

I disagree. There have been newbies on this forum asking all sorts of questions and the regulars are more often than not falling over one another in their eagerness to make the newbie welcome and provide useful advice.

But if there's one thing we don't like it's attitudes and if somebody comes with one they are fair game for a bit of baiting.

Before joining a new forum, the normal thing to do is browse past threads, a bit like you don't buy a house without checking out the neighbourhood. And if they still don't think they ought to reformulate their question they get what's coming. It's a tough world. People in that sort of salary bracket are presumably in leadership positions, and leaders who can't read the situation and can't read people are well, maybe in the wrong job.

BonBon: Criticizes people for remarks; doesn't provide a useful comment.

it's the overall disconnect with prices and money that baffle people; and certainly the overall "im too lazy to look around, just tell me" kinda thing.

As a noob I spend my time reading stickies to see if my question was already answered.
