Re: End of contract

I hope by now you have got this sorted. Just wanted to say that it isnt necessary to take a translator. You might have to wait a little longer, but in my own case I had an English speaking case manager and the RAV always found a help desk person to speak to me in English. The RAV you go to does depend on where you live (ie which Kreis) but my experience was very positive. In my short time looking for work I had two case managers and found them both helpful, polite and nice. The RAV often gets a bad wrap, but I have to say, my experience was a good one.

Re: End of contract

Will your L permit also expire at the same time when your contract end? Would RAV renews the permit for you whilst you are job searching?

I always want to know how RAV treats contractors on L permit. Will they deny you the benefit money cos you no longer has a permit? or will they renew you the L permit? but for how long?

Once you registered with RAV, please give us an update on the above question.

Re: End of contract

I just wanted to thank all the folks here who supported me and offered advice when I had lost my job couple of months ago. Here is an update to cheer you up:

I started sending my CV for contract work straight away and I also realised I was eligible for a generous RAV unemployment benefit. Within 2 weeks I had 3 interviews arranged in Zurich via agencies. Two weeks after I was told my contract would not be extended at the current company, my boss approached me again and said he had a change of mind and would like me to stay for at least another 6 months. When I asked him the reason for this change of decision, he thought for a moment and said that his boss thought it would be difficult to find a replacement for you. Which makes me think that his decision was likely to have been based on spur of the moment and me taking a week off for family commitments. I told him that I was now in the middle of job hunting and had companies interested in my CV, so he must wait couple of weeks. In hindsight I should not have been so honest as he kept asking me continuously over last month on whether I had decided to stay while I was going through interviews.

Only today I will have a firm written contract with one of the companies that interviewed me in Zurich last week (the other two rejected me). This company is a direct competitor of the current one and I know they will get a little jealous. The salaries are similar except Zurich would be more expensive ( I just had a look at some apartment costs in ZH and the prices are almost 3x what I pay here!)

I think on the balance I want to leave and these are my reasonss:

1) - To tell you no extension and then change your mind and say extension is granted: this leaves me with little confidence

2) - My rate was cut by 5% (not a lot) last summer but the manner with which it was conducted was not so professional. I had a call from the agent while I was abroad on holiday to tell me take it or leave it effectively.

3) -An added source of resentment is with the current agency who placed me and my English friend/colleague with this client. He was diagnosed with cancer last month and left to UK last week and the agent are doing their best to pay him as little sick pay as possible (he will receive 50% of his pay as opposed to 80%). I am not happy with the way he is treated and will tell that to both the client and the agent on my leaving.

4) -I am too isolated here socially.

I will miss the nature and the beautiful mountains of this area which I can see from my office window but I look forward to seeing some human beings after work in Zurich as this place, though blessed with a gorgeous nature, has more cows than human beings to see after work (no offence meant to cows). Also I hope when I am in Zurich I can meet some EFers and that it will be so much easier to get to the airport (2.5 hours from here) and other places.

Thatís all !
