PhD at ETH Zurich: How difficult is it to get in?

Hi good people from EF : )

I'm new here and my name is Kay. I searched a bit on the forum and found very few related topics. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but anyway, please do comment. Thanks in advance.

So, I hold a master of science degree from Canada (bachelor degree in Asia). I enjoyed the master study and research a lot and I'm thinking of getting a PhD on Nanoscience/nanotechnology (functional nano-materials) and have an research-oriented career later.

I did an internship in Germany last year and liked Europe a lot. This is one of the reasons I am considering have my PhD in Europe, preferably German speaking countries. ETH Zurich is on the top of my list for some obvious reasons.

So I'm wondering: How difficult is it to be accepted into the phd programs at ETH Zurich? What are the most important criteria/s?

1. Opening and Matching?
2. GPA?
3. Publications?
4. Statement of Purpose, letters of recommendation?
5. Others?

The reason I am asking is that I've contacted a few professors whose research I'm very interested, but the results.....sigh... (either no openings or got no response after sending CV, paper, and other supporting documents). I know I should be more patient (actually I waited only two to three weeks by now, which is not long I guess).

But I'm very anxious and appreciate if someone who can comment on this thread and give me a general idea. I can provide more details of my academic background if necessary.

Sorry it's a bit long and not well organized.
Thanks a lot for reading

Kay

I will not directly answer your question but I think what I'll say might be of help.

From first hand experience (with the EPFL though) and second hand experience through 3 or 4 friends, I know that it is MUCH easier to get in if you do an internship with one of the professors you are interested in working with. Contact them for an internship followed by an offer for PhD if they like your work.

Thank you very much for your reply! I did remember that another thread mentioned the same idea. However, I just graduated and have my degree already. Is it still possible to get an research internship without being a (registered) student?

Although I prefer directly applying for PhD, I'll keep your suggestion in mind. Thanks for bringing it back to me
