Which in turn would force them to pay local salaries due to the anti-dumping provisions in place.

Which would have been illegal, and shows that this company doesn't really have the faintest idea about their target market operational / legal framework. So probably the EUR 22k offer is irrelevant to begin with...

Makes you wonder about the veracity of their claims to have won "all mobile phone networks upgrade contracts" as well... hard to see Swisscom, Sunrise and Orange all dealing with the same tiny "hole-in-the-wall" type company with no local presence.
They are currently working on the Orange network. I know this because I spent a day at their office and visited a few of the crews on site. I know it sounds a bit off when I think about it now.

Hi there,

I just wanted to get some advice on my situation if possible. Here goes: I have been living in Zürich since May 2011 and worked in the city up until the end of January 2012(left due to difficult circumstances). I have experience working in IT, Broadband, Programming, Office and General Administraion. I am also a qualified chef and have worked in a number of bars over the years.

English is my mothertongue. I also speak fluent German and a little French. I have been searching and searching, been to several recruitment agencies, had several interviews etc but nothing (or abyssmal offers less than CHF 40K. I've had professional help with my CV from Badenoch & Clarke so that's not the problem. I don't know anymore, things are starting to get really tight and I'm thinking I might have to leave the country. Leaving is an absolute last resort, as I love it here.

I just don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I'd take anything now at this rate. Any pointers or possible office type job opportunities would be greatly appreciated. I did search the forum but there were none that matched my situation. Last week for example, I was sent to a large travel company. Had an hour long interview in Swiss German. They told me that I would be perfect for the job and they would call in the next few days. Nothing. Just had to get that off my chest.
Hi there,
Try this company they're specialized in hiring IT people.

Good luck though, am unemployed and have been looking for a job for 6 months, I know how hard it can be some days!!!
Hang in there,
I

Re: Two months out of work and still nothing

you must accept that being unemployed from time to time is a fact of life. Gone are the days of decent job security. Employers are nervous about the economy and are more in a standby mode keeping things as they are squeezing the most they can out of current staff according to many reputable Swiss business papers. Employers are also more keen on cutting staff and IT is one of these areas which gets hit 1st.
Only a minor number of people with great connections, good and in demand skills are able to hop from job to job directly. Add to it the fact that one is a foreigner with German as not his/her mother tongue and there you have it.

The market right now stinks at least in the middle to upper IT management area. In a regular market it takes around 3-6 months to get a job however over the last 2 years it is more like 6-12 months.

There is no shame in being unemployed and seeking a role. It is normal so taking just any job just to say you have one is not necessarily an advice I would give. Focus on finding a proper role at a acceptable wage even it it is temporary.

Last year I was unemployed for 2 months and had a 3 month garden leave. It took that long before i was actually located by a recruiter via Xing. I must have sent 150-200 applications during those 5 months and got miserable 2-3 interviews before being offered a role.

Heads up! it will be OK!

Re: Two months out of work and still nothing

Thank you Jaro and Chay. I have only just got back on to the thread now.

Quick update for everyone: Around a month later I finally got my "dream" job. This is what happened:

Initially I had an offer from Kuoni Travel, I responded with my start date (asap of course) and everything was running smoothly, until one day the contact stopped and I couldn't get in touch with anyone. Swiss employment agencies are for the most part not too great. It turned out that they found a Swiss person, equally qualified etc, around 3 days after making my offer. They then withdrew the offer as they had found a Swiss for the role.

I then had two interviews on the same day for Groupon and Oakley. I loved Groupon as soon I walked in the door; the people, the really cool atmosphere and the fact that it is an up and coming company.

I was thrilled when they made me an offer and I started on the 23rd April. I am now Groupon's Prod Ops Engineer for Switzerland, which is the best step in my rocky career so far. I really love it and I want to thank everyone that helped and supported me on the forum as well as personally. I finally got there! If anyone has any questions, fire away

Can I have a job too? (Just joking)

I'm glad you didn't take that other job. It sounded very shady. Congrats!!!
