All of the fields you mentioned have a wide range of salaries. Maybe you could look at some job advertisement websites to see which are most in demand.

Depends what you mean by demanding, a lot of time and energy on your behalf, or high demand/lots of recruitment?
If the latter, qualified childcare would be high in demand at the moment.

If you are considering what career to follow, the idea of training to be an attorney would likely require very specific knowledge/training in Switzerland, whilst the qualifications for many of the other jobs mentioned would be more easily transferable from India.

I am an undergraduate student at IISC, Bangalore majoring in Mathematics.
I want to do Masters and Doctorate at ETH Zurich in ||Computational Science and Engineering|| or ||Mathematics/Applied Mathematics|| will that be the good option in terms of jobs in Switzerland.

Are you trying to steer your future (career selection) as a function of the present salaries in some swiss cities? There is a big gap between a computer scientist vs. a physician, for example. I would try to find out what you really enjoy studying and doing, leave the rest for later.

I like Mathematics and Computer Science the most.
I am also concerning about doing MBA after Doctorate at IMD. Will that make a good academic portfolio. Also is ETH Zurich Degree demanding in the world outside Switzerland.

FWIW, I would think that a degree from ETH would be as desirable as any degree from a reputable school. Students from all over Europe (and other parts of the world) come to study at ETH. I know several engineers (mechanical, electrical, etc.) who did their graduate work at ETH.

You might want to work on your language skills as well, as many of us are having a hard time understand what you are asking/saying. Then there is the fact that coming to Switzerland adds more language barriers as you could well need German or French to get by...

Yes, ETHz is generally well respected as arguably the top institution for continental Europe and definitely amongst the top worldwide.
IMD tends to put greater weight on professional performance and potential than academics. If you scan their site, you'll see that though there are a few academics, the vast majority of their students, past and present, are more professionally focused.
If you want an MBA from a school that puts more weight on academics, look to St. Gallen.
And your list of professions is quite erratic. A lawyer generally has nothing to do with a mathematical physicist! You may want to iron out a general direction before tailoring everything to a specific school.

German/French may be helpful for admin and social aspects, but at that level, nearly all material will be in English anyway. Not to mention the "sub-culture" that are the universities - there are plenty of people studying that have been here for years without a single word of the local language. Good/bad - debatable. But they're generally only here for the university anyway.
Not saying that some English practice wouldn't be a huge asset to this person though! You'll have a very, very difficult time studying anything with your current level.

In which case, I think language skills can be important...even if it is just to go to the grocery store and ask where to find something.

If I have one regret, its that I didn't do a subject that interests and inspires me e.g. English language, literature or history. Instead I did a BSc and PhD in the biological sciences for practical reasons, and although it pays the bills I have very little interest in the subject outside of work.
I will make damn sure that when my son chooses his subjects, he follows his passions and dad can worry about paying his rent | The following 2 users would like to thank Castro for this useful post: | |

Of course, 5+ years in the universities should be enough time to learn on the side. | Quote: | | | | | If I have one regret, its that I didn't do a subject that interests and inspires me e.g. English language, literature or history. honestly, Federer has a better job and earns way more than any actuary or Physician. So tennis would be the way to go...
oh wait - no tennis skills? well then, back to - what are you good at? and what are you passionate about??

This is an excellent post, thank you
Funny you said that: in my previous life, my favorite subjects and the ones I got the highest marks on were Latin and Ancient Greek, but in terms of careers, I thought "Then what?". So I picked my "second favorite" subjects, which all involved playing with numbers. With a lot of hard work and a lot of luck (being lucky with an internship and landing in a high-demand, growing field), I feel I made a good career choice. As you said, one has to always stay updated with current developments - which in some cases happen daily - and the struggle is never over, but I am happy I chose what I did: moderate liking with good career perspectives vs totally love it but high unemployment potential.
When I am done playing with numbers though, I still enjoy being entertained by this guy and this guy, and a nice cup of rooibos tea |
