Search is a valuable tool.

Einzelfirma Vs Selbständig for one person business?

Einzelfirma VAT? VAT for product resale?

Do I HAVE to register as Einzelfirma?

There are more threads.

Re: Self Employment Registration

well, then Idosan. You need to get your permit first. Follow the directions on the other thread. Tell them that you plan to be self employed and then they will tell you what you need to do. It is the commune/gemiende that has to approve your request to be self employed.

Good luck.

Not quite what I had to do in 2010 for kanton Zurich MM, maybe other kantons are different?

For ZH, 1st stop was the SVA in Zurich, just off Langstrasse for an interview. I had to submit a business plan, list of services offered, and sources of business. This was to validate I was actually self employed and not acting as some form of single source contractor with an employer trying to blag the system. Everything was in English, and there were a couple of other small bits of info' they requested. Once they were happy I was issued with my register number which all took about 10 day, and this I had to take to the gemiende. My accountant then takes care of all tax submission, and I get my AHV/IV/EO selbstandigerwerbe bill quarterly an this is reviewed at the end of the year and any under/overpayments addressed then. Afaik, it's the SVA that make the call as to if your self employed or not the tax man or gemeide. I'm EU and already had a B permit, so maybe if the OP has no permit then the process is different,

He has not even applied for his permit yet. That's great info for him, but a few steps ahead!

Actually, I mis-wrote. It's the commune that will decide if he can get a permit and which one (B or L), then AVS will decide if he can be self employed.

Well, there is an issue whether the commune will actually give him a permit to be self employed. They might not unless he can provide proof that he is self sufficient or married to someone working, etc which we don't know. So they could put a damper on his plans to be self-employed. Step 2 is to get the AVS to approve his self employed status.

I was trying to just be simple so that he can get himself over to the commune to register and to ask them what his options are. He needs to do that first anyway. Plus really he hasn't provided enough info to get a thorough answer.

Re: Self Employment Registration

You have to apply for the Permit FIRST, then everything will follow. You don't have to worry where to register, the government or relevant party will contact you for everything (from our experience). They will make sure everything in order! Once you get the permit, I suspect they have link or pass your case to the relevant department. Every now and then you'll receive letters from people you do not know. Just call them to find out & you;ll be okay. Good luck

Re: Self Employment Registration

As everyone is saying you need to register yourself first. You don't need to worry where as it must be at your local gemiende. Don't think the government can contact you to show you the way as suggested if they don't know that you exist or where you live, that's your responsibility to do it first, the rest will follow, surely.
First things first!

@Idosan: Just in case you've not come across it already, also have a look at the informative start-up guide brochure attached (in English) from http://gruenden.ch/en/.

All the best and good luck!

Self-employed person in Switzerland can obtain a B-permit or G-permit (if they are cross-borders) but never L.
