agency not recommended: ElanIT

I don't recommend to use this agency, if you are working in IT.
Here are a few reasons, based on my actual experience with them.

Your CV may be randomly forwarded around their consultants within Switzerland, and they call you back to suggest any other position (apart from the one you are interested in).

There is not much communication between the staff so don't expect another person in the company to actually know about your case, or be able to pass on a message to a colleague if somebody is out of the office.

You may have to arrange your interviews by yourself as they might not do this, also your consultant may not be able to get things like dates, times, of interviews correct so it probably works better this way.

Sometimes the whole company goes out of the office on the same day for training, so be careful not to phone on those days. Let's hope a client doesn't try to call on the same day.

They may claim to have great relationships with their clients in your field, but in reality don't seem to get a response from the HR even if you apply for a job. The market is Switzerland is already very small so this may kill off important career chances.

Out of interest, are there any agencies you would recommend?
How would you recommend someone go about getting an IT job in Switzerland? What worked for you?

I used (and still use) jobup.ch
Create an online profile and they forward you all positions matching your criteria. They are like a google search for jobs in Switzerland. They aggregate job postings.

I found the company I am working for (or they found me) via jobup.ch

Good Luck!

You do not explain how they are different from other agencies

Thanks for this, but I am not looking for work.
Rather, I was trying to get some further information on whether the original poster had found work and how they did it.

It's very easy to post a negative message about some service or other, but it works both ways. Candidates and clients can also be difficult to deal with at times.

Re: agency not recommended: ElanIT

so you tried to screw over the agency (regardless of how much work they did or didn't do) and now you slag them off on an open forum, where employes of said agency will be members.

Good luck !

Its a pretty closed shop here and everyone talks to everyone else, get yourself a bad name and reputation and you'll be screwed.

Re: agency not recommended: ElanIT

From the other side of the equation.. Elan are just the same as the other agencies

The only thing to distinguish agencies is if they are (or are not) on the preferred vendor list for a 'client'.

If they are then the process is usually pretty automated among bigger companies.. the job spec is distributed electronically to all the companies on the PVL. The hiring manager won't give two hoots if a CV comes from Elan or any other vendor on the list.

IMHO you should stop feeling victimised and try your best to build good relations with any and all agencies.

I recommend to use a site like jobs.ch. I was surprised by the number of vacancies you find there for experienced staff. Also I recommend to use small specialist agencies who have real contact with their clients, not just a CV emailing service.

I don't feel victimised as I have been much more successful using these 2 methods. I just mention this because
a) somebody asked me to
b) as advice to help other people avoid wasting their time

I have dealt with many agencies but never came across one like it, who fails to follow-up. Since then I have dealt with several other agencies in Switzerland, but not had a similar bad experience with others.

I didn't try to screw over anybody. I just posted my experience as this is an open forum, in case it may be useful to others in a similar situation.

well they are certainly "laid-back" compared to in other countries....

Laid-back?

I'd say most are useless, just copying adverts and hoping to get business afterwards.

Some even operate without licence, typically UK ones. These ones often have no idea about salaries and cost of living in Switzerland.

Re: agency not recommended: ElanIT

indeed the post above is so true its really key to find the 5% which are really committed. The turnover is really very high as well at these companies i.e in the 95%. Thanks for the info.
