Coming to Switzerland and working as a doctor?

Hi Folks!
I can't find any information on working in Switzerland as a doctor. My wife is a physician and I'd like to know if she needs to convert her degree, to request specific permits...
Can you point me in the right direction, please?
TIA
Didu

Re: Physician howto

I would have though that the medical industry would have governing bodies that would be able to regulate international standards adn advise on them. If there isn't such a body that can supply information, then I shall henceforth cease to have any more faith in modern medicine.

I'm astounded.

I'm sure someone here will have an inkling. Richard or shorrick perhaps, lob rockster even.

Re: Physician howto

The medical industry is regulated. But would they have a better answer than EF?

Absolutely.

Re: Coming to Switzerland and working as a doctor?

Federal law regulates exhaustively the conditions governing recognition of foreign diplomas in Switzerland - for medicine that would be the law of December 18th, 1877, and the ordinance of october 17th 2001.

All EU-25 medicine diplomas are formally recognised in Switzerland ( Clicky clicky here).

Hence, what the lady needs to do is either find a clinic to employ her or start out as an independent.

the last option is not going to be possible unless she takes on an already existing private practice/clinic. The moratorium is still ongoing, till when nobody knows.

Re: Coming to Switzerland and working as a doctor?

My husband has recently started working at the Triemli Hospital in Zurich - probably the only thing he hasn't been asked is about his qualifications. I'm not sure he's even shown his GMC (UK registration) card.

He is doing a one year clinical research fellowship - postdoctoral clinical research - he got the post by being introduced to the professor and applying and gaining a grant from a European body that pays his salary.

Which is where one of the problems is - he's not formal staff at the Triemli, which does not have a vacancy for someone like him, so they wouldn't initially write him a contract, which has made it hard for him to register here, and very hard to find accomodation.

The hospital training structure is very formal and hierarchical, they promote their candidates, so I'm not sure vacancies even arise. The hospital said something about advertising the job to anyone in Switzerland - and since there was no job, another reason for no contract.

Luckily things have been sorted out but I'm not sure where vacancies are advertised, if they arise.

Such jobs are rarely advertised. You must network and build up your own contacts.
