Is the standard work week here really 42.5 hours?

My wife just took a job here and my company is finishing up the transfer for me. My company only has 3 employees, all home-based so not much info there, but HR tells me my work week will now be 42.5 hours. My wife, working for one of the largest employers in CH has a 40 hour work week. Is 42.5 hours/week really the standard work week or does my company have it wrong?

WTF!

My minimum day is 9 + .5 for lunch.
That comes to 47.5.:msnshock::msnshock:

Yes standard is 41-42 hours, and the upper limit 45/50 hours (depending on sectors). Far more than the EU average but salaries are higher too.

If you are looking for a good work-life balance you may be better off leaving Switzerland asap:)-

Mine is 40 hours.

Google searching says that the maximum working week is 45 hours for most of us, although it probably doesn't include overtime. People I know who work for Swiss companies usually clock in and out, and any hours worked over their (typically 40) weekly maximum are added to their holidays or (rarely) paid.

Thanks everyone.....I always work more than 42 hours a week anyways...but it was the principal of the thing. But if that's the Swiss thing, than ok. Doesn't actually change anything for me. So much for coming to Europe to slow down, eh.

NP.

BTW....Just beware of the fascist, EU inspired conspiracy just unearthed by the parallel thread..

Re: Swiss-bashing hits new highs in EU: ambassador
Look at a map of Europe in 1940 and a map of Europe in 2012: striking similarity.

The EU is actually the fourth Reich, with only Switzerland, Norway and somehow the UK resisting.

This is a fascist monster built up by and for Germany, with collaboration from the French.

Haha yep!

I had 35 hour week in UK and worked about 42

With my 42 week here I work closer to 60, work weekends and public holidays

Slow down, no chance !!

Over at my office, we are required to be in the office for 42hours per week.
That includes smoking breaks, coffee breaks, toilet breaks, surfing the internet for best deals, EF and occasional flirting with the new English gal, etc etc..

Work? I never count the minority part of my days....

I feel for ya man. I just found this out tonight after having accepted the offer and after having moved here a couple of days ago. A friend told me this in passing tonight and I said "hey wait, what was that..."

Unfortunately my welcome package was sent to my home address while I was traveling for business during my last job, and the welcome package states clearly that the work week is 42 hours. I instead negotiated based on the contract, which did not state the workweek hours. So, the fault is mine for having made the assumption of a 35-hour workweek similar to NYC's.

Oh well...them's the breaks I guess.

42.5 is normal (8.5 * 5)

In my case, 7:30-12, 13:30-17-30

I go motorcycling 12-13:30

I ALWAYS negotiate for 40 and never work more than 40, only if there is a real emergency, like Servers down. I have it written in my contracts that anything over 40 is prohibited :) Even if I only worked 30hrs I would still have a way higher standard than 120k.

Anyone working more than 40 or 42 i can only pity seriously, ever heard that time is the most important asset in life and not work?

People go for lunch here, then a spot of grocery shopping perhaps or even exercise of some kind. Eating a rushed sandwich at your desk isn't the culture, hence the slightly longer 'work' hours. It's very pleasant spending an hour over lunch at a sunny restaurant table.

Max stay on topic, work week (i.e. what you get paid for) and not how much longer it becomes by doing various activities. The points you mention are not only popular in Switzerland, and I have to tell you that the last point is very much subjective.

That's true; I blaze when the weather presenter says it's going to be "miserable with yet more rain". I quite like a good downpour.

That's all very well when the 42.5 hours includes lunch. When it doesn't, and you have to clock in and out, it's a bit of pain. Fine if you're being paid hourly though. :D Not so fine when you negotiate a daily rate based on 40 hours...

I've worked in places with 45 hours (excl. lunch). Rarely do the employers get an extra 5 hours a week out of their workers - coffee/smoking/toilet/chatting breaks just increase in length.

43.5 paid + 2.5 unpaid (lunch). I still can't get used to it as I switched from 37.5 paid + 2.5 unpaid (lunch).

...but then CH is officially on the "countries with shortest work week" list:

Must have to do sth with part time workers (house wives) or employees with decreased workload (and as well the salary).
