Chances to find a job at 48 ?

Greetings all,
This forum has been the source of many a good pieces of valuable information!
I explain you my concern and hope you may give some advice. My partner and I are thinking about relocating to Switzerland and I wonder if I still have real chances to find a job at my age (48). Iam currently working in IT, as a senior technical support for a big american multinational. Iam EU citizen and I speak fluent french, spanish and english.

Thanks again!

Re: Chances to find a job at 48 ?

I think your chances are quite low, unless you have a special IT skills.
Also, there are lots of Proj Managers here and business analysts.

You should
1. Take a period of time to come and stay here, pre-arrange your interviews
2. Try to secure a job before coming here

Sorry, I am of the opinion the IT market is shrinking in CH.
I hope you can find something.
Good luck.

Re: Chances to find a job at 48 ?

I have several colleagues who were older than you when they arrived in Switzerland, and not all of them were transferring within the same company. So the fact is that yes, it can be done and is done all the time. Does that mean it will be easy? Certainly not. But it is possible.

In your favour are your language skills and being an EU citizen. As for your age, of course you can try to turn that to your advantage by promoting the amount of experience you have.

Regarding IT, it really depends on your specialism - if you have one. And if that specialism has a demand here that cannot be easily satisfied by the locals.

Think carefully about how to present yourself in your CV. If you're just an IT generalist you'll find it tough. If you do have a specialism you should try to find an agency who understand it and has contacts. I really wouldn't bother just scanning the web for job vacancies and firing off speculative applications. You need someone to actively toil away on your behalf, looking for the right vacancy. Only an agency can do this.

Re: Chances to find a job at 48 ?

It's possible, but your best chance is probably if you know people in a company and they can recommend you.

Knowing the language will help, so French speaking part of the Swiss might be best.

Being EU means you have a much wider choice of job that you can be hired for so you don't need to be a rocket scientist or something similar.

It would be best if at least one of you has a job before coming unless you have a lot of money.

many thanks for all your replays, specially the positive ones. yeah, you're right, no one said it could be easy and I agree that my best chances are working close with a head hunter that knows by strong points.

As for your age
Ye god's and little catfish, 48, the guy is a young whippersnapper, so green his ass needs mowing.
Seriously, the cards of CHian IT are stacked against everybody over 30, however the generic HR beancounters want 25 year olds with 40 years of experience and who are content with peanuts.
You may get lucky but don't hold your breath.
