2 year contract vs temporary unemployment

hello there,

i need some feedback from you guys.
soon, very soon my contract will end. I have been offered another 2 year temporary contract for a job that i do not completely like inside the university.

Given also the current situation, do you suggest me to take it, of to keep looking for a permanent job in industry?

Someone suggested me to take the temporary and change as soon i find something else. But i am not sure such a move is proper and advisable in the small ZH jobmarket. How will be seen such a move in ZH?

I am entitle to the unemployment benefits, phd in engineering, early 30's, would like to stay in zurich area.

Sorry if i do not introduce myself, but clearly i in this moment i need a little of anonymity, you never know... hope you understand.

thank you a lot

If you turn down the temporary contract you will not get benefits, you will be punished with upto 4 monhs without any payment. By law you have to take any work offered. A full time contract may be ended by giving notice as per the terms of the contract, probably 1 month in first year 2 months for next 9 years, no more secure than a 2 year temporary contract, probably the same notice terms.

Use the search function, this question gets aired every couple of weeks.

Re: 2 year contract vs temporary unemployment

yes thank you,

Maybe i didn't explain myself. I was not asking about the benefits or the penalties, but only an opinion on the strategical decision given my current situation , the current economy and job market.

Would you turn down the temporary contract to look for a permanent?
( i mean, rumors say that the Euro is dying)

If you take a 2 year (not 6 months) contract would you brake it?
How would have been considered?

As far as the benefits, yes i was aware that i would have lost them.
But not 100% sure since I am still not on RAV.

Re: 2 year contract vs temporary unemployment

If you say the job market in ZH is small, what are your chances of finding something different in a short time?

Take the job being offered to you and then keep looking.

You take the job being offered even if its not exactly to your liking. OK, I would understand if was something completely different and not in your field of expertise, but I think its not?

As for ethics! I wouldn't worry about breaking your contract if you find something better. The job market is very fluid at the moment and any employer would not worry too much about letting you go if they had to.

Temporary unemployment can last a long time. Believe me I know!!

Re: 2 year contract vs temporary unemployment

I would go for the temporary contract on the "bird in the hand" principle and keep looking for something better. Ask to have a look at the contract you will be signing, just in case there are massive penalties for ending it before term. In my experience getting the "perfect" job could take some time.

That's unlikely as the penalties will go both ways, it's known as notice period!

Unfortunately i am a kind of inexpert in job search to have an estimate of my chances. I know that in academia I can go more or less where i want. But for industry i do not know, since i even see some skepticism on how one with my CV would adapt to 'the real world'. I guess i have decent chances since the ZH market seems small but very technical. What i was considering speaking about 'small ZH market' is that everyone knows everyone here.

Ethics, is one part of the story. The second problem is that one of my quality is to finish what i start. Psychologically i have problems breaking a contract. This turns against me in such situations :P

So you mean that massive penalties are not to be expected, if i well understand.

I am not thinking to a perfect job, but to a change of carrier, from academia to industry. I am not in my late 20's anymore and i have the feeling that , given my goal, this temporary contract will just slow me down and add little to my CV. Although the position is closer to industry than my current position or my PhD.

Thank you, you have been all helpful.

I agree... it is ALWAYS healthier for the mind and the wallet to have income. Besides, just because it doesn't sound appealing now doesn't mean it you cannot make it appealing. There are good things about most jobs, you just have to make it what you want.

I know what you mean about that. My SO is the same. It's not good sometimes.

Anyway, you should probably take the new job you are being offered and just go into thinking you'll have to go a bit against your nature when you find the next, best job. You might be surprised either by how fast it goes or how long it takes!

Either way, it's always better to be in job to find another job.

Anyway, good luck!

Re: 2 year contract vs temporary unemployment

I am surprised that everyone suggest me the same thing. Probably I am over-thinking the issue.

Probably the fact that i got this position by sending just a couple of CV, make
me not realize the risk of keep looking and been unemployed ...

thank you all again

As has been said above, handing in your notice is not breaking a contract, indeed it is sticking to the terms of the contract. Walking out and not coming back is.

Is this your first job?

Supposedly when unemployed, the chances are much lower to be considered by a HR (along the lines: "why is (s)he not employed, could be his/her fault"). That's what I've heard.

Re: 2 year contract vs temporary unemployment

Nah! If it aint fun, it's not worth doing.
You don't have to drink a whole pint of milk to notice it is sour, would you rather speculate for something better or would you rather let your brain die in a job you hate?
That is what counts in the end.

Re: 2 year contract vs temporary unemployment

Well, you are right , for braking the contract, here I meant not finishing the 2 year project. Obviously if i leave i will do it according to the contract. So, as before, it is a psychological problem not a legal one.

Is it my first job? well depending of the point of view.
I am stepping up one level from a PostDoc to a researcher position.
But honestly i consider both 2 post doc positions. So ...

It's not that I don't agree with that. It's just that you didn't say you'd HATE the job. Just that it was not ideal. You might end up liking it. Or at least not hating getting up every morning!

Plus, the fact is that the job market is tight and if you are unemployed people do judge and wonder why are you unemployed.

Good luck!

I would take that temporary contract if I were you.
You dont know how long it will take you to find another job.

Don't take for granted the fact that you are entitled to the unemployment benefits in CH.

It is a no brainer, take the job, look for another one for all the reasons given already + you will learn a thing or two that will add some points in your CV

I have to agree with Yacek, having a job seems to attract job offers while when you are unemployed dry spells are much longer.
It´s often the same in the contracting market except on occasions when they need someone "yesterday" when being on the bench comes in as an asset...of course in combination with what you have to offer in terms of skills
