Arbeitszeugnis, inhalt

Hello All

I am looking for opportunities in Canton Zürich, one of the urgent things I need to finalize is a proper work reference from my current employer, I have heard there is a normal standard of how this is done and what questions needs to be answered, is this also what you call Arbeitszeugnis?

Any good examples, and what would normally be required to be answered in this paper?

How much detail would I have to go into in this reference, just very briefly or is it expected lots of detail?

From what i expect this is what needs to be answered:
- Who am I?
- Where am I?
- What am I really doing?

Any good suggestions and tips would be appreciated

Name & address of company, type of business.

Your name, date of birth, type of work you were doing, how long employed, any promotion, why you are leaving the company.

fully competant in the work you were doing.

100% satisfaction achieved with relationships: to superiors, to colleagues, and when appropriate: to your customers, to your employees.

In the olden days there were "secret" messages in the references, but these are not allowed today.
"He put a lot of effort into his work" = meaning, the job was too big for him.

In my experience, the HR or linemanager needs to write this.
And they cannot (meaning not allowed to by law) to write bad things about you.
You can reject the letter if there are bad things inside.

Again, this is my limited experience working in 2 major swiss companies here, where employee is well taken care of.
Others will tell a different tale (i was told).

Arbeitszeugnis does usually not explain who you are and where you stand but how you did your job and what working with you was like.

they are not allowed to use codes any more (but some still do it so watch out, as mentioned "he did his best to.." means "tried, but failed").

they are not allowed to give negative statements about you or your work.

This paper is usually issued by HR upon the information received from your manager(s), best would be to have it reviewed by an independent HR specialist.

If you believe they will give you a bad to average Zeugnis (maybe because they think you have not worked up to their expectations) ask for a Arbeitsbestätigung, this is a confirmation that you have been with the company from x to y and what your job consisted of.
But of course a new employer will wonder why you only asked for a Bestätigung instead of a Zeugnis..
