What's the % increase from UK salary to Swiss?

Hi guys,

So I have been living in Switzerland for 6 months now, and have got used to the whole way of living, costs etc. I've been employed within a head office enviroment and receive quite a low salary in my eyes. (yes it's much better than what you'd get in London, but general life is more expensive here).

My probation meeting is next week, and I would like to request more salary.

To do that, I want to ensure that I have sufficient materials to back up my requests - does anyone by any chance know the average salary percentage increase from UK to Switzerland?

Would appreciated any comments and help.

I wouldn't rock the boat until you've done your 12 months. Asking for more cash at 6 months is unlikely to go down well.

And typically, your pay will not be reviewed until 2013 anyway - chances are it even says when the pay review dates are in your contract/offer.

Was that 10% eaxtra on what you earned in the UK or 10% on your previous Swiss salary? just for clarity of course

Out of curiosity what field do you work in?

Oh no, when I went from UK to Switzerland I had a 100% increase. Thats not because I was out of work before, I literally doubled.

Then since, I have had a 10% increase.

Field: tax

There is no average percentage increase because it heavily depends not only on your job, qualifications and industry but first and foremost on your age/experience. Generally spoken the younger, less qualified you are the bigger your increase will be when relocating to Zürich. The longer you work in your field the smaller the difference will be, your salary becomes somewhat "international".

Re: What's the % increase from UK salary to Swiss?

100% bump from my UK salary, but not open for review or bonus until April 2013.

As mentioned above - regardless of the bump, your pay review date might be fixed.

If you did something exceptional - such as fell on a grenade to save the lives of your colleagues - you might get one at 6 months, but I'd avoid the negative publicity you might incur by asking for one at that early stage.

you can check salarium and/or ask people in similar jobs as you what their wages are like.

if you think you were low-balled on salary because you didn't realise the costs when living here, it think it is worth having that conversation asap.

I'd say...when I was pitching for contract work - and being offered it - I was looking at almost 200% of my UK salary, as a daily rate equivilent. The contracts were all short term though (1-2 months only).

When I came over as a contractor I set my hourly rate at the best I'd been able to get (for longer-term stuff, not the odd daily consultancy work I'd find occasionally) plus enough to pay for accomodation and flights home every weekend. Back then the exchange rate was around 2.5 chuffs to the pound, so this wasn't quite such a tall order as it may be now. But it must have represented about a 20% increase on my UK rates, including the fact that I no longer needed to run my own ltd company.

When I went permie a couple of years after arriving I dropped by around 25% (assuming I'd been working the maximum contracted 2000 hours per year), which I was quite pleased with I've never received more (sometimes less) than the inflation-related increase since though

Of course, if I look at my salary now, converted at current exchange rates to sterling, then I'm on about twice what I'd get for doing the same job in the UK office.

Re: What's the % increase from UK salary to Swiss?

My experience in Switzerland is that pay is generally only reviewed when you first take a job or when you get promoted. This is why it's particularly important to negotiate hard going in, because it's very difficult to get pay adjusted later on.

Aside from pay rises at the time of promotion, normal practice where I work is inflation adjustments (~1%) each year.

As others have said, I don't think your request for more money at the 6-month period will be well-received.

Re: What's the % increase from UK salary to Swiss?

There seem to be two schools of thought here. Ask now or wait.

I am going in the ask camp but you need to go in armed. I think your UK salary is irrelevant what you need to figure out is what is the Swiss salary for your position, years of experience, industry. If that is what you're getting you may not be in a strong position.

If you are being underpaid by those standards you can use that and the argument that you are finding it difficult to maintain the same standard of life as you had in the UK.

If you have a decent boss, are doing a good job, and approach this in a respectful way (not demanding) then I dont think you can do any harm asking. In fact tactfully and respectfully getting your point across even if denied a salary increase can only be seen as professional way to handle a difficult situation.

If you wait 18 months and then bring up that you are finding it difficult financially one could argue that you've been making it work for 18 months so.....

Do you have the option to return to the UK or find another job in Switzerland and is that something you would want to do? Its always easier to be a bit firmer if you have options and are prepared to walk away.

Good luck.

Re: What's the % increase from UK salary to Swiss?

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

The relation of your UK salary to your Swiss salary is completely irrelevant. You need to find out what people who do you job, with your experience, in your industry (maybe even your company, some pay more, some pay less) HERE make.

It's a common occurrence that people think I'm getting x more than in the UK 'whoohoo!'; but then find that their salary doesn't give them the same lifestyle, that they are part of the whole salary dumping thing that seems to be on the increase, etc, etc, etc.

(Of course others also have found good surprised too. But we don't talk about the good things. )

About "I think your UK salary is irrelevant what you need to figure out is what is the Swiss salary for your position, years of experience, industry."

True but top down if you want to have a similar life in CH as you did in UK then you will need at least double. If the above gives you less than double then forget it.
