Part-time jobs in finance: do they exist?

Hi,

I would very much appreciate if someone could advise me on the following:

Do part-time jobs exist in investment banking /asset management/ hedge funds in Lausanne, Vaud, or in Lausanne/Geneva corridor? Given that the majority of financial jobs are in Zurich, is it possible to find part-time research job there with only occasional commute (say, once a week) from Lausanne?

My other option could be private banking in Geneva with Russian clients. I would prefer to avoid this path, but any advice on this direction, including part-time opportunities, will be also appreciated.

Thank you very much in advance for all your comments.

Re: Advice on a part-time finance job

I am a bit curious for the lack of any response to my question. I am certainly not offended as I completely understand that people can be fed up with the job opportunities questions. Yet I asked questions regarding finance (which fortunately or unfortunately is my field of study/work) jobs 2 times and got no replies at all.

That leads me to a question (maybe I should start another thread?): who are you professionally, wonderful people, mostly posting in this forum? I guess that many are in IT, some are lawyers or like that. I am just curious

Re: Advice on a part-time finance job

To be honest, it is a difficult question to answer. Yes, I have seen part-time jobs this side of the country, but mostly accounting relating rather than finance, investment bank types. I don't remember ever seeing a part time job for a bank/hedge funds and the like. You may like to try JP Morgan, more wealth management than IB, but they alwasy seem to advertise for positions..
Mind you part time in USA is probably full time here...

Re: Advice on a part-time finance job

Thanks MaryT, I guess part-time jobs in Finance are really not common. Here in US it is absolute oximoron. I am not really pressed to find it quickly, so I will just keep looking.

thanks again for replying. marvin

Re: Advice on a part-time finance job

hi Marvin, EF people are from all walks of like and professions. Many are IT, many work in banking/pharm or related fields, but a whole lot don't have anything to do with any of those. Your post probably just popped up when not many people were online and got buried by others.

I personally have never seen part-time IB or hedge fund jobs in the Zurich "corridor," whatever that is. I'm less familiar with asset management. The private banking idea would probably be a full-time thing too. I thought that when you have clients, you have to be there for them wherever, whenever. There's sure to be demand for Russian-speaking advisors though.

Re: Advice on a part-time finance job

There is close to zero investment banking in French Switzerland. Asset management and hedge funds do not like part-time very much, and the position will be bound to be clerical.

Re: Advice on a part-time finance job

indeed your best bet is to start off full-time and try to get it down to part time. Have you searched any jobsites to see what's out there or have you been waiting since Monday for the answer?

Re: Advice on a part-time finance job

Thanks for the replies! My situation's become clearer, and we are leaving Switzerland in February for 9 months. Then we're coming back for good (my husband gets a permanent position). So I reckon it is too early for me to start looking for any job for myself now, I will do it when I come back in the end of the next year. And yes, it was a good idea, I may have to try to get a full time position and then reduce it to part-time.

Bartholemew, while I have some knowledge about in IB or AM, what do Russian-speaking advisors do? Is it just good professional Russian-native translation of financial terms for rich Russian clients? While it is most likely not the type of the jobs I will be looking for, I am just curious if anyone could be more detailed about them.

In any case, thank you all again for your replies.
