Out interest did you get the job?

Interesting to note that many ask for the toilet! In all the interviews i have attended (and i have attended quite a few after coming to Switzerland), I have never gone to the toilet first - somehow never occurred to me

Now i know what to do before i walk in for the next interview

What do you do when you reach early for an interview?
Please don't arrive early for an interview - just stop off for an Espresso first. A lot of small companies don't even have an HR department and you're going to be directed straight to the person who is going to interview you. I can tell you that this causes a lot of hassle (that person has a real job to do as well) and doesn't create a good impression.

^ You sound like the sort of HR person we have all grown to love...

Nothing about the journey to get there, the preparation, the nerves etc etc etc... just the hassle it might cause for the HR person. Please don't arrive early for an interview.. priceless. I suppose it is an additional hassle if they get offered the position. All those extra forms, pffff...

The funny thing is, I'm not an HR person at all - I'm a software developer in a very small company who happens to have done a lot of interviews (that's the nature of startups... didn't I say that such companies don't have HR?)

If you arrive early, I've got to babysit you when I didn't budget for that time (you know, I may have a telco with customers, or an internal meeting, etc).

I'll also say that if you're going to be late or need to reschedule the interview, a telephone call to the company will be fine. It's simple etiquette that goes a long way.

I agree to the point. However this was no small company - a large MNC and honestly they didnt seem to mind that i reached early.

This time take a different book for your 30 min. read, or they may well think that you're either a slow reader, or were just trying to impress with your choice of reading matter.

and while sitting in the lobby... no last minute "adjustments"

I went on one interview and that nice semi'dark wall behind the reception was an entire wall of two way mirror.
Is this you?

You didn't mention it was a police interview!

Although, one time I arrived very early, drove around a little and got rear ended on a roundabout on the way back
.
Now the OLD Mirfield would NEVER have let that pass

Anyway, even though you didn't get the job....wasn't all lost

Re: What do you do when you arrive a little early for a job interview?

when arriving early i dont go to the reception straight simply because of
- they might feel stressed to babysit me
- dont have room to make me sit down, apart from the entrance area/lobby
- id feel awkward to sit 30mins around there.

i said if i was early, i go n sit outside somewhere and check my stuff.
if the interview is 9:00am i am there 8:55 am, saying hello, i have an appointment, receptionist calls interviewer, takes 5-10 mins until he/she shows up, time for toilet-> bring the tie into place-> lets get it on!

Generally, stop off and have a beer.

Tom

P.S. However my last interview was 22+ years ago, and was mostly over lunch at a Michelin starred restaurant.

Re: What do you do when you arrive a little early for a job interview?

I think going 30 minutes earlier is a bit overkill and have some drawbacks.

Sometimes interviews are relatively back-to-back and they might not have an extra room to accomodate you right away. Or the receptionist might notify your interviewer on the spot, who is doing something completely different and not ready yet to deal with you.

I think showing up 5-10 minutes earlier is desirable, you achieve what you want - coming across as eager / punctual / you name it. Arriving much sooner can have some drawbacks without providing any upside. My 2 cents.

A good friend of mine, who held several senior management positions before he retired always made a point of using the toilets - not because he needed to, but to see the condition they were in! He was of the opinion that the condition of the toilets said a lot about the people working there....

too early is bad, best get there exactly 5 mins before

punctuality is important here, prove your swiss skills (and superior swiss watch timing...)
