Swiss academic/corporate culture?

Hi Everyone -

I'm finishing up my PhD and thinking about applying for research/teaching positions here in Switzerland. A couple of years ago I had a visiting fellowship at ETH and took some courses at UniBasel, so I've been around a little.

What's baffling me is the 'corporate culture' (so to speak) of Swiss universities. I really can't seem to crack it. Since I came here, I've had more people stand me up for appointments, not reply to emails, un-invite me from things, etc etc., than I care to count.

I've studied and lived in several other countries, speak a few languages, and generally feel like I'm pretty good at cross-cultural communication and navigating new places.

But clearly I'm not 'getting' something here. Are there unwritten rules about communication, hierarchy, etc? What am I doing wrong?

Re: Swiss academic/corporate culture?

You probably don't do anything wrong ...

The market here is very small and you have dozens of competitors, including the Swiss ..... Many other PhD holders are in the same position than you

Good luck
