Rates per hour for teaching English in CH

Hi, I know this or similar) has been asked back in 2011 however I was wondering if anyone would mind giving me some advice on what I should charge for 60min private English lessons. I am a qualified teacher (Bachelor of Education Primary/Adult majoring in TESOL/TEFL) and by the time I start privately teaching I'll have completed my Masters of Education (TESOL)- I have one subject remaining). I also hold my Cert. IV in Assessment & Workplace Training, which is an Australian requirement for Adult Education. I've more than 12 years teaching experience in various countries teaching all levels and am qualified in both Australia and the UK. Oh, and I’m a native English speaker.

I haven’t been in Switzerland long so I was hoping to find out an ‘average’ price based on my qualifications and experience from those who are teaching here. I’ve been asked to teach a few people privately and I don’t want to shoot myself in the foot by either charging too much or not enough for what I should be and what I ‘deserve’ to be paid.
Many thanks for any tips,
Miranda

Certainly no less than CHF 50 - this is what you might expect in a fairly low-paying language school. I would suggest that private lessons are more usually around the CHF 100 mark in the Zürich area anyway.

Hmmmm, just a piece of advice from somebody who has privately taught for looong - you are starting here, do not ever dump your prices just because of that. Your excellent credentials and skills will build up your client base, not you trying to make your clients happy, pricewise, you would shoot yourself in a foot. The 100fr for 60min is a standard,if they can't, combine students or teach shorter classes. You gotta deliver, though.

Location, location, location. I live out in the sticks and teach French, German or English in my own kitchen - so charge less (30+ years experience with uk B.Ed. Hons Degree).

Re: Rates per hour for teaching English in CH

Well, it depends where s/he's going to teach - at clients' homes, having to travel there, park, petrol, etc, - or at her kitchen table? For an official school - and in a large town like Zurich, or out in the countryside? Prices vary depending on a lot of factors. I charge 40 as students come to me, so no expenses and then I have all my materials here.

Official language schools in Neuchatel pay bet. 40 to 60 CHF per hour.

Re: Rates per hour for teaching English in CH

I charge 40.-/60 min, but the student comes to my place or my office. If it is at my place, he or she tolerates my kids being there (mild background noise). That's for private individual tutoring (I teach French).

Re: Rates per hour for teaching English in CH

The rates look different but it comes to about the same 60fr, no matter how and where you teach. If you add up the transport, either gas and parking or SBB, prep or admin time, material you use to teach, copies, etc etc., the final rate isn't really that different for both private tutoring or language agency/school. Some school will pay you a little less, since you get the contract for a bulk and a security and they know it.
