As an aupair can i work another job legally?

Hi all!!

I'm planning on becoming an Aupair this december in Lausanne. I will also be a qualified CELTA teacher by the end of november.

Does anyone know if it's legal to work as an aupair and as an english language teacher part time?

Any advice is much appreciated..

Thanks

Legally, I do not think so as Au Pair's have a very specific status.

Really? because I read on a forum here that essentially as en eu citizen the L permit works the same for anyone..

The special aupair status only applies to non eu citizens..

So you're not really an "au pair" as such. Just a child care provider.

Yes. It's no problem as long are you are getting yourself registered and contributing to AVS as required.

Re: As an aupair can i work another job legally?

So they family would have to register me as a child care provider in order for me to work two jobs?

This is what I'm confused about..

Ok I'm going to have to call the relevant authorities myself I guess! Hoping they speak english.. my french is not amazing..

I read on the english forum here L permit for Finnish aupair that as an EU citizen essentially I'm just another worker.. and there's no special aupairs status.. or rather that I'm restricted to a number of working hours under contract and that I should re-register as a mothers helper and then there's more flexibility around it all...

Re: As an aupair can i work another job legally?

The Au Pair status is very specific, irrespective of origin- an Au-Pair has to live as part of the family, has restricted hours, cannot have sole charge of children and only do light house-work- and given hours to attend language classes.

If you are employed as a house employee- you should have a proper contract, Swiss Health Insurance, and all social payments made (unemployement insurance, etc) and be registered for tax purposes, etc.

Two very different jobs, 2 very different sets of regulations. So which one will it be for you?

There is plenty of information already here on EF. Do a search with 'Au Pair'. Here is an excellent post :

For Au Pairs, here are the regulations per Canton Vaud (in French)

http://www.vd.ch/fr/themes/vie-prive...vite-salariee/

Basically, they have to be placed by an authorised agency, be between age 18-25, work not to exceed 30 hrs per week with at least one full day off, they take at least 120 hours of language courses in the local language, their work is compensated appropriately*, and be lodged in a proper room in the families home.

*For some Cantons, ie. Geneve, I believe some salary compensation minimums for au pairs and nannys are required by law by the Canton.

In this link below, you will find info for Canton Geneve (in French) for Au Pairs, including minimum compensation.

Go on the Vaud official site, and you'll find it.

Re: As an aupair can i work another job legally?

If you are an EU citizen and you get a job offer you will be able to take it. It may mean you get a different permit but there is no barrier to this.

By the way, we seek an au pair. what service do you work for and how can I find out more about getting an au pair here in Zurich.

thanks digitsclimb.. although living in the family home I think their are certain laws that disallow people to do so... i'm really shooting in the dark here, just passing information from word of mouth.. I think it's time to pick up the telephone and do some thorough reading.

I don't work for an agency.. I found my the family i shall be working with through greataupair.com .. You do have to pay a fee for the website, however it's well worth the money as you have an abdunance of potential employees in your hands. It's a very popular website.

Re: As an aupair can i work another job legally?

So just to finalise this thread!

I have just called the employment authority in Vaud. They explained that i cannot work another job while working as an Aupair..

HOWEVER. If I get a teaching contract first then I can work as an aupair to supplement.

Bizarre hey?

So what this means is I can go work as an Aupair with the family. GO job hunting. Cancel my contract with family once I find a job teaching. start working as teacher and then restart the contract with the family. It just has to be cleared by the employer.

I know it sounds weird, I'm just relaying what she said. Theres the loophole in the system for all of you.

I suppose this might be a silly question, but is the family you will be working for ok with this arrangement, ie you working another job?

Yes it was made clear in our initial talks upon meeting each other. It happens that the work routines we have in mind seem to fit well together. Though I'm not sure how that would help you?

Did you use the term "au pair" when you talked to them?

Doesn't help me at all, thanks for your interest. I was trying to help you because in my younger days I may have thought something made perfect sense to me or was a great idea only to find out I hadn't covered all the bases.

Point taken drmom.. and i appreciate your thoughtful words. I will be vigilant about this and leave nothing to chance.. hence why I called the local authorities who govern about this matter.

But honestly my primary objective is to commence my teaching career. I thought it would be a nice to settle with a family first to familiarise myself with this beautiful region, while saving some money. Of course the family know this, it would be unfair and would them in a terrible situation if they didn't. Fortunately I'm not that kind of person

Bizarre reply from authorities?!? If you start with a teaching contract, that will mean that you have to be registered for tax, unemployment/social payments, and full Swiss health insurance - then you could do some 'babysitting' - but a totally different (as above, very specific) status than an Au Pair.

Trying to be helpful, hope you realise, but just don't get it...

She specifically said aupair work on the phone.. not baby sitting. I will call again tomorrow and post back here. It is really bizarre..
