Re: Only singaporean/SPR

You can apply if you're a permanent resident in Singapore. I assume the job is either in Singapore or here but related to their government (such as working for the embassy).

you'd probably fail the exam for that job anyway, so no worries.

Re: Only singaporean/SPR

Thanks. It's for a leading Singapore-based developer and manufacturer of advanced micro-optics solutions, with an R&D center in Zurich, Switzerland. Too bad then! I'll keep job hunting!

Re: Only singaporean/SPR

Might be worth asking them why there's a requirment to be a resident of Singapore to work in Zurich! It could be that the job was advertised via an agency who adds that text, without thinking, to any job related to Singapore.

Or it could be that the R&D is related to something secret (unlikely, as they'd do it in Sg).

Re: Only singaporean/SPR

Well I sent them an email this morning asking them what do they mean but they haven't answered back yet. That's why I thought I would ask the EF.

Re: Only singaporean/SPR

Hi there...

Short clarification: SPR stands for Singapore PERMANENT Resident. That is not some expat like me simply living there, but the equivalent of a Swiss C-permit, a permanent resident permit.

The story is simple: Singapore is surrounded by countries with lower wages. So to ensure that not all lower to mid paid jobs are swamped with low-end immigration and giving not-so-well educated Singaporeans a chance to make a living are there pretty stiff quotas for employment. I run a software development team and unless I can prove that somebody is a highly trained specialist that I cannot find locally do I have to employ Singaporeans and SPRs in a quota of 4:1 to foreigners on a short term work permit. In principle the same thing as the Swiss system where an employer has to prove that he tried to find a Swiss, then an European before he is allowed to hire a non-EU.

Bottom line: If this is clearly stated in the job description are you wasting your time when applying.

Edit: Ok, if the job is based in Zurich does this not make much sense... given the quality of Singaporean corporate IT solutions - yes, even worse than in CH - would I expect this to be a mistake, they probably have some form that automatically puts it into every job description they publish. I did actually develop solutions for the government sector and unless you are in really critical defense areas can you get a security clearing without being a SPR.

Erm, no. The job ad is on a page for jobs in Singapore, not Switzerland. It says so on the top, doesn't it? The fact that the ad for a pretty junior role is in English and uses English education levels instead of Swiss ones kind of give it away as well.

This is the typical case that DOES require the nationality/PR - because no company wants to waste the valuabel spots they have for international people on something that banal. Sorry if that sounds, harsh but it is the truth. I employed an HR and admin assistant myself and I had the exact same requirement... so don't waste your time on it.
