And Yank....wow, I feel old. Although it's not entirely English slang, do you remember the war between the North (Yankees) and the South (Rebels)?
Some Americans don't know what a chad is...

I'm American married to an EU citizen, and I had no problems moving here or finding work. I also have a B-EG permit renewable every five years.
Kids change the mix though...I forget, you don't have kids do you latigresse? It's not impossible to find work, but particularly for US women with young children...it's a real challenge to work for a positive net paycheck.

FWIW, I don't have the same last name as my husband and have never been hassled or had a problem here with any of the authorities about it. But, I know everybody has different experiences.
Do you travel on your own a lot? The only time I didn't get hassled was when I flew alone. Maybe I just got the most bored guys in the line....

...as see the details for enrolling my child in school there when that time arises?.
Schooling is very much a Cantonal issue and often with a lot of local variations as well, so it will depend on where you settle. There is some work on harmonisation of schooling across Cantons, but it is still quite a way from being implemented in a lot of places. So see where you will live, and then you can determine what age schooling will start, what the hours will be like, etc..

Re: German Husband + American Wife--Is wife okay to live in Switzerland?

Oh no, not an American married to a German, that will never work

So, I am American, got married to my German husband back in 2000. Last time moving to Germany in 2009, I also didn't get a permanent resisdent permit (I think at least) but it was easier for the authorities that time around to get it for me through my kids who are dual citizens vs. through my husband. But either would have worked.

But, you don't care about Germany, you care about Switzerland.

We gave our Gemeinde all our documents, none of them apostilled (sp?) or notarized twice or sealed with dragon's blood. We got married in Austria, had that marriage certificate, along with birth certificates (again, the ones for me and the kids were from the US and we didn't get anything translated or extra notarized) no problems.

You will have no trouble living here if your husband gets a job - as mentioned you will get the same permit he does.

Now, as for if you will actually be able to find and get a job or open a bank account, that is a different story. But for living here, no problem.

Re: German Husband + American Wife--Is wife okay to live in Switzerland?

Great info!

Whats the big deal with being an American and having a bank account?

I can still use my German bank account I suposse.

Another poster shared with me that the only banks which are approving Americans (for joint accounts, etc) is UBS ad Credit Suisse....why such the difficulty?

Im not really concerned but I do like to be treated fairly. If I am a residence in the EU should'nt I be granted a bank account? Its not like Im on a travel visa or something...lol.

Read up on FATCA and FBAR and the US demanding banking info on US expats, greencard holders, etc. You'll also need to file income taxes every year to the US and declare any bank accounts outside the US that have a balance of 10k USD at any point during the calendar year. They don't have to give you a bank account...

You'll need it as, I assume, if you don't have a bank account, your husband will (and probably your name on the account as well) which will need to be declared since you'll need 3x1 months rent (assuming zurich area, budget for 5-6k CHF) for a deposit on an apartment and such just to get settled in so 10k USD isn't so far outside the realm of possibility. The penalties for not complying with the FBAR are pretty steep so...be sure to read the fine print.

Doesn't matter if you don't have it, you still can't open new accounts in almost all banks in Switzerland if you are American or somehow a US "person"...

Re: German Husband + American Wife--Is wife okay to live in Switzerland?

Its okay. I have a German Bank account. That isn't really a big deal and my husband can so desire to get one for his work paychecks if necassary.

He can keep his 10k in there. lol. and I suppose just pay German taxes on it.

He needs not pay the USA taxes as he has never even travelled there.

Interesting info though!

Its good to be informed of all the lil hassles and stuff.

So whats the best place to live in Switzerland?
hehehehe....

Zurich seems nice but that is the only city I clearly know of.

My husband likes this town and it seems pretty on the map! I will enjoy any busy town with easy train access and stores to walk to etc. I will be having a baby w/ stroller. I prefer not to live in the surburbs until I am comfortable driving. Im used to living in a big city. Would be nice to be close to a college or vocational school so that I can continue my German language classes.

No, I don't have kids. But my expat and Swiss friends who have kids either work part time or have to pay exorbitant amounts of money to the Kinderkrippe or nannies so they are able to work full time. I don't know anyone here personally who stays home with their kids full time. I'm aware that it's challenging and that they all make major sacrifices one way or another.

I traveled frequently for business the first few years I lived here, so I was alone. But even when I've traveled with my husband, nobody ever bothered us.

Maybe they were just looking for an excuse to flirt with you, P
