| | What is the average salary for a mid level java web developer?
Hi to everyone,
My name is Jay, I am looking to work in Switzerland or UK, evaluating which could give me more savings(income minus living expenses).
I am a computer science undergraduate with 2-year work experience and 1.5-year start up business experience. The start up project was an online drag and drop website builder and sharing platform, a bit like wix without the shopping cart part but with mobile site builder and some other differences. The project consists of 30k+ lines of javascript(on top of Yahoo ui 3 and a little jquery) and about 20k lines of Java code, and I was the sole author of the project.
My main technology strengths are :
1. Java web develpment
2. Spring, play framework 2, akka, domain driven design
3. Familiar with the java memory model, performance tuning and java 7 concurrency
4.Mongodb, Oracle
5. Modular & event driven javascript development with Yahoo UI 3 & Jquery. Performance oriented
6. Css skills
What salary level should I expect in Switzerland for a permanent role ? What about a contractor? What companies will most likely be interested in me? What are the average living expenses in Switzerland like?
Thanks for any pointer or opinion.
Kind regards,
Jay

$CHF 120k seems a bit high to me as I got NZD$65k(about $CHF 50k+) while I was working at new zealand 2 years ago. What are the living expenses like?

More info from you would help. Are you an EU or non-EU national? Makes a big difference in getting a permit to work here for a start.

In general, I think most people are better of in CH than in the UK. Cost of living is higher, but salaries are a lot higher too. People will just be guessing at figures, best thing is to wait for a job offer then figure out if its enough to live off, as costs such as taxes, housing, insurance vary vastly from Kanton to Kanton.
Switzerland is not an EU country. As a non EU passport holder, you need to secure a job offer, then that company has to apply for a residence permit for you & prove that they couldn't find an EU citizen to do the job, before your permit will be approved.

Tom | | | | | True, it's not so don't confuse EU rules with Switzerland's. As a non-EU national it'll be much more difficult for you to get a job than an EU national would have. It's not impossible, but just remember you are last in the jobs queue. Employers have to consider Swiss and EU nationals first and spend a considerable amount of time and money proving to the Swiss authorities that they can't find one. http://www.bfm.admin.ch/content/bfm/...zulassung.html |

In my opinion UK is the worst place to work in terms of salary versus cost of living.
Dear OP, there are a lot of threads about prices in Switzerland and with careful search you can find a lot of salary research + expected cost of living papers issued by finance firms. Create your own understanding of the prices.
But if you are unfamiliar to Switzerland let me summarize it to you:
If you are earning above 100K, able to do a lot of handcraft alone (basically if you can repair anything in your apartment) and go to shopping in FR or DE; then you could be saving 1/4 - 1/3 of your salary.

What are the living expenses like? | | | | | Living costs in Zurich are basically the same as in Auckland. Some things are a little more expensive, some things a little less. But the salaries in Zurich are on average just over twice those in Auckland. I'd say you should be looking at between 90-100k CHF, which would make you very comfortable. When I was in that range I was able to save 40% of my salary easily (despite taking more holidays etc).
But you need to get the visa situation sorted out, as having a NZ passport doesn't guarantee you anything here or elsewhere in Europe. You might as well have come from the Congo or North Korea.

Do, no.

Tom | | | | | Actually neither is New Zealand. So that's a double no.
