Re: Looking for a job recent accounting graduate

Are you an American or Swiss?
I'm also interested what you can find in CH, because we are kinda in the same situation. US job market is tough as heck, but with many hidden opportunities. No clue about Swiss job market.

Re: Looking for a job recent accounting graduate

Rinax09, knowing your nationality/ies would help. If you're just American that puts you last in the jobs queue unless you have a permit that allows you to work here. If you have Swiss nationality too, then there's no problem in looking for work. A couple of websites to try:

www.jobs.ch
www.jobup.ch

lulumink, pretty much the same for you. You're last in the jobs queue and don't have a Swiss permit so unless your skills/experience are outstanding or you can fill a niche in the marketplace, it's very difficult to find a job, especially remotely.

Bear in mind, both of you if you're American, that getting/keeping a bank account here is becoming more and more difficult due to the US's incoming FATCA law. Also as Americans you're required to file, and possibly pay, US taxes regardless of where you live/work in the world.

What are your language skills like? Yes English is used a fair amount over here in banking/finance, but it's not a Swiss language. There'll be plenty of other people also looking for jobs who speak German/French/Italian (3 of Switzerland's 4 official languages) so that could put you at a disadvantage as well.

salihovich, answered in your other post.

Re: Looking for a job recent accounting graduate

To reply to your post, yes I am a U.S citizen but recently married here and now am a resident of Switzerland as well. I don't speak any of the official swiss languages but am starting a course soon to learn German. I just don't want to be waiting very long to find a job. I know I can learn german but I also know I will never learn it the way I speak English which will always put me at a disadvantage I fear.

Unfortunately, you may have a long wait. It's just not easy to find a job here when you just have English. But have a look on the websites, you might find something quickly, you never know.

Hey man, thanks for your thoughts. I'm not looking for jobs in Switzerland. LOL. I'm a Swiss and I'm just curious how tough the job market is. I'm looking for jobs in the U.S.

But thanks for your advices.

Not really a disadvantage. Try to find an international company where only English is required. You have a good major. I'm really curious what you can find, because a friend of mine with the same situation wants to find a job in CH.
Do you have a bachelor or master degree? I don't know if CPA helps in finding something in CH. anyone?

Career Opportunities

Hello everyone,

I am a recent college grad with a Bachelor's in Accounting. I am 22 and was very eager in starting a life in Switzerland but after coming here it seems so difficult
To find a job. It has come to the point where I am just willing to work at a job so long that it is english speaking. Any ideas or comment? Thank you so much for your help

Re: Career Opportunities

Hi Rinax,

I wish you all the best. My advice? Invest in learning German/ French / Italian depending where you plan to work in Switzerland and take a look at this:

http://www.ey.com/CH/en/Careers

Good luck on your search and never give up, your chance might be just be around the corner, meanwhile work the language skills they will always help.

Cheers

Sparrow

Re: Career Opportunities

What country are you from? Britain or US, Canada? Without knowing which it's difficult to advise you. If British then it'll be easier than if you're American or Canadian because you'll be behind everyone else when it comes to being considered for a job.

Sorry for any confusion, but I have merged OP's two threads together because they ask the same question, and the fundamental issues with job hunting here haven't changed in a month.

Re: Career Opportunities

Looking at your other postings I see you moved here with your spouse. Is he Swiss or an EU national? In which case it should be easier than if you were here on your own.

One of the problems you may hit though is that many firms will not employ Americans if they will have signing rights on the company's accounts because that means those accounts will have to be reported to the IRS.

Have a look on the links posted and here are some job websites which may help too:

www.jobs.ch
www.jobup.ch
www.monster.co.uk (yes they do advertise jobs in Switzerland, just change the location setting. It sticks sometimes but can be changed).

http://jobsearch.monster.co.uk/jobs/?q=accounting&cy=ch

Meanwhile work on learning German to help your job prospects.
