How many hours do you work?

Pursuant to my employment contract, I am required to work 41 hours and 15 minutes per week. I work mainly with Swiss colleagues, and have noticed that most only work their minimum hours (if not less), whilst there are others who may be classified as "workaholics" as they usually arrive at work around 7.30 and leave around 19.30. (Though, I do wonder how productive they are during this time)

In my old job in my home country, I used to work insane hours, sometimes up to 80 hours a week, which often went unnoticed and unrewarded. I repeated this pattern when I first moved to Switzerland, but my New Years' resolution has been work less and enjoy life more. I now try to only work my minimum hours, though I find I am still working an extra 1 or 2 hours a day. I am also taking German classes during the week, and need to devote time to that.

My boss (one of the "workaholics") has not raised any questions, though I sense that he is wondering why I am leaving "early". It could be purely psychological on my part, but I was wondering what the expectations are for everyone else in their workplace.

Do you all work your minimum hours or do your feel an obligation/expectation to work extra hours? Are there different expectations in Switzerland?

Can I include online time in it? Where I work people look funny when you leave on time. So I leave 10 minutes after the official time

Re: How many hours do you work?

Things are pretty busy at the moment so I have been working my full minimum hours of 42 for the last few weeks. But usually I sit between 35 and 39, which is still too many in my mind.

I am a contractor on an hourly rate, so that gives me the flexibility.

I never work extra hours without compensation. If I need to, my manager isn't doing their job right, and I'm not sacrificing my life for his/her incapability.

Though I do accept that there are times in your career where you need to work harder to advance your career, but that counts as a form of compensation for the extra effort.

Re: How many hours do you work?

All my hours are recorded and they're expected to be correct at the end of the year. So normally, I work 8:30 to 5:30, but occasionally I have to put extra hours in, when this happens, I can leave early another day, or just build them up for extra holidays.

Re: How many hours do you work?

I am a regular employee, 42 hrs a week. I don't get paid for overtime. I have 2 little kids at home, so I rarely work over 45 hrs a week, else they are asleep when I get home.

Some colleagues frown or make little comments to me or other co-workers when I leave at 5 PM. I don't care. I get my job done, I do it well, and being in the office for an extra 1 or 2 or 3 hours a day is going to decrease, not increase my productivity.

Sidenote - I have never in a prior job in Germany or in the U.S. felt as observed as I feel here. Seems everybody is keeping track of my timecard but me.

Re: How many hours do you work?

40 hours per week because that's what it says on my contract right?

If I need to work later it's no big deal and I do it, it doesn't happen so often in this role. I have a few late ones a month when I have a release and that's about it.

Yes, sometimes there are tasks that need to be completed after hours. But I always find a way to retrieve that time.

Re: How many hours do you work?

I must work at least 2000 and not more than 2200 hours per year. That's just over 8 a day.

I manage my time accordingly and have flexible upper-management who allow me to do this - I thus work very effectively when and where I want.

As I do not get paid for overtime, I try to maintain a good balance somewhere in the middle of expectations. And as I am happy at home, I have no problem leaving

This is so true I've lost count of the number of times I've approached this in companies with managers, normally their underestimates look good on them, but it's a pain in the ass for everyone else.

Re: How many hours do you work?

i put in on average 50 hours per week. i dont know what my contract says.

i have been on the receiving end of sarcastic comments due to the fact that apparently i dont put enough hours in.

10 hours commute per week on top of this.

maybe the original poster can add the poll function... would make a more interesting thread.
