Looking (rather desperately) for a job in the Lausanne area

Hi everyone,

I have been looking for a job within communications in the Lausanne area for quite a while now. I speak English, Danish, and French (B2), so I feel like I have a good foundation to find a job in this part of Switzerland. Despite from that I have still not found anything and I am starting to think that I am not approaching it correctly. I know networking is the key word in Switzerland, but when you are new in a country that is not very easy.

So my question is, what have you been doing to find a job in Switzerland? I need some good advice on how to get my foot in the door somewhere! Any advice would be most welcome

I am looking forward to reading your replies

Louise

I know that it is difficult to network when you are a newcomer here but it really is the best way to go. Did you move here to be with someone? Do they have connections at all that could be of help to you? Is there a Danish community? Surely there are some Danes in Switzerland, even if not in your neighborhood. I would join any club you can that has other people with your interests or your background. It won't help you if you must find work soon but some folks have made new connections through volunteer work. Good luck!

OWIT has groups in both Geneva and Lausanne. Unfortunately, I think you just missed a networking event last night in Lausanne, but there are several other events coming up soon. There is also an Executives International organization.

Are you taking advantage of LinkedIn? Google for some tutorials on how to use if for finding a job and then make sure your profile is up to date, join groups in the area, etc.

Finally, have you tried temporary agencies? That might be a way to get your feet in the door.

Good luck!

Re: Looking (rather desperately) for a job in the Lausanne area

Hi again,

Thank you very much for all of your good advice, keep them coming

Sean Connery: I have earlier worked with online communication for both internal and external web pages. And also a little bit with social media and event planning.

Queen of Cups: Yes, I did move here to be with someone. But he is working in a French company, and he mainly has contact with other 100 % French companies and even though I speak some French I would prefer that there would be some English as well.

LearningAlways: I am using LinkedIn, but I am not sure that I am using it the best way I can. I am struggling a little bit between wanting to contact people and not being too pushy. Do you have good experience with LinkedIn? If yes, what worked for you?
And yes, I did have some contact with some agencies when I came to Switzerland, but I am also a junior and I do not have lot of experience and for that reason they seemed not to be so keen on taking me on, unfortunately. So I did not have much luck in that area.

I have not put enough effort into LinkedIn to have it really work for me, but I am not looking for a job. Have you joined groups on LinkedIn and posted queries or responded to other discussion threads? There is a LinkedIn group I joined earlier in the year that leads you through a lot of things to do to improve your LinkedIn presence and to use it for networking. I know the group owner is starting the process again in December, but a lot of the recommendations are available in a report. This group may be focused on entrepreneurs more than people looking for jobs, but if you contact the owner, she may be able to point you to the right sources. If you start contacting people for information and help in smaller ways, that may help you get over feeling pushy.

While you are looking for the right opportunity, I'd join every expat social and professional organization, I could find and just try to widen the circle of people I knew. And be sure to join local Facebook groups.

Build your own website or find a local organization that needs help with theirs, or with their social media strategy. You'd have to work on a volunteer basis but you could build contacts and gain some experience.
