Factory/unskilled employment in NE Canton

Hello all,

I have been living in the neuchatel canton for about three months. My french is fairly basic although my comprehension is improving rapidly. I am working in a bar and babysitting irregular hours but I would really like to find a more stable 9am-5pm job. I have noticed a lot of watch and chocolate factories/ cleaning companies and I can imagine my level of french would be sufficient for this type of employment... Is anyone able to give me advice on how to secure an interview for this job? I have been directly to websites but in the careers section I can only find skilled vacancies. Or does anyone have any contacts in the region who might be able to set me up with an interview???

Any help or ideas would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Welcome Sas- and hope you find something soon. Maybe tell us a little more about yourself and experience? If you Google 'Agence de Travail La Chaux-de-Fonds' you'll find loads of agencies and jobs, including temp jobs. Are you EU or not, and have you got work permit? Bonne chance.

Re: Factory/unskilled employment in NE Canton

Thanks Oldie,

In Australia I studied psychology and was a social worker in the youth sector, obviously this kind of work is not feasible with the language barrier..I have been volunteering at a creche here and babysitting as well. I did get a job in a creche when i first arrived but in the end the travel time and cost to lausanne from la chaux de fonds just was too difficult.
I actually did try with the agencies when I first arrived but actually I did not find them very helpful. Perhaps they will be more so now that my french has progressed..
Yes, I have an italian passport and my bar job gives me a low level work permit but i can add to that with more employment - if i can get it!
Thanks

Have you been to Recif yet? You could possibly talk to some of the women there- help with English classes, volunteer at a nursery, primary school, or secondary/Lycée as English assistant with older students (I did in the UK and really enjoyed it)- often volunteering can lead to a job too. Sorry can't be more help at the mo. There are several English/American firms in La Chaux-de-Fonds, including Johnston and Johnston, and one watch company (name escapes me now)- also some in Neuchatel like Baxter and Celgene.

Edit: Graham watches

Yes, RECIF are great! I started volunteering in the creche for a few months at the end of last year. unfortunately the french classes are complet until the new course commences in June.
I do have a list of names of watch companies and chocolate factories in the area but I just have no idea on the application process... I can find skilled jobs but nothing much in assembly etc...

But they might need people in HR, customer care, etc, with good English.
Have you met Sapin yet, one of our really nice EF member who live in La T'Chaux (as it is affectionately called here). What is your current level of French, and do you have transport? If so I could exchange teaching for your time helping with jobs around the house and garden here, 1 hour for 1 hour (I am a native speaker, qualified and experienced) - perhaps talk to Sapin and see if you can come together?

Thank you so much odile! I appreciate the offer and would love to accept it (i could certainly use the help with french!) but I don't have transport though so I am not sure if it will be simple to get to you?
Yes I have spoken with Sapin before, she was really helpful - it was her who initially suggested RECIF for volunteering given my background in social work.
