How to get a job in Switzerland for a non-EU software developer from the US?

Hello everyone,

I am non-EU citizen. I have been working as a SDE software developer engineer at Microsoft HQ for 3 years. Currently, I am planning to return to Switzerland as I am no longer interested in the American life.

I graduated from EPFL and had a short period of time (8 months) working for a IT company in Switzerland before going to the US. I would like to ask how hard it is to get a IT job in Switzerland for a person like me from outside the country. According to my old experience, it's way easier to get a job if I were a resident. But now I think it would be much more difficult.

It would be greatly appreciated if you guys could have some advises for my case.

Thank you very much,
Long

Welcome to the forum. It's not easy for non-EU's and it's getting harder for EU nationals as well since the recent vote to curb immigration numbers.

As a non-EU you need to have an approved job offer before you come.

Employers have to go through a long and expensive process to make sure they can't find a Swiss, EU national or someone else already living here with a valid work permit who could do the job before they could hire you. Here's what's entailed:

https://www.bfm.admin.ch/content/bfm...zulassung.html

You could come as a tourist and do some job hunting while you're here, that's okay. What is not is starting work before your permit's approved as outlined in the link above. Also you would have to leave Switzerland to get your Type D entry visa - either by going back to your home country, the USA, or somewhere like France or Germany to get the visa stamped in your passport.

As you've been working in the US you'll find it difficult to open a bank account here due to your Green Card status. This is due to the US's ridiculous FATCA law which requires all banks worldwide to report US citizens/Green Card holders' account info to the IRS. Until you officially give up your Green Card you may still need to file US tax returns and may owe US tax on top of your Swiss taxes.

I expect it to be possible with time and effort - especially if you are willing to search across all of Switzerland.

Non-EU status makes it harder. But much like the H1-B process in the US, if a large company wants you, they can normally make it happen - it just takes time and commitment on their part.

Also, I've heard that Swiss companies do look favorably on degrees from Swiss universities. So you probably have at least one advantage.

Guys,

Thanks a lot for the advice and useful info.
I have one more doubt. Do you think the fact that I worked for a company in Swiss for only less than 1 year and then quit will bring a bad impression for future (Swiss) employer? They might wonder whether I will work for them for long time or not and things like that...
