Patent Attoney jobs

Hello to everybody.

I'm an Italian Patent attorney and Community Design Attorney and I would like to know about job vacancies in Switzerland and/or where to search, if it is better to gain some other qualifications and so on.

Thank you

Maurizio

But are you a professional representative before the EPO, Maurizio? If not, I suspect that you'll have difficulty in private practice. There are more possibilities in industry (as unqualified employees are entitled to represent a company before the EPO), but I understand that much of the mechanical industry of Switzerland has outsourced its patent work to private practice. The really strong industrial patent departments are the chemical industry ones, especially Big Pharma in Basel, but that wouldn't be of interest to you.

Re: Patent Attoney jobs

In machine industry, you could check websites of e.g. ABB, Alstom, Bombardier with their openings for Patent Officers.

Maubiso, welcome to our forum.

Jern, one of our EF members, is a patent attorney in Bern. Maybe he'll see this thread and provide more info.

Hi, thank you very much for your reply.
Yes, I am not a fully qualified EPO representative (up to now I just have part A of the EQE and I have to take the other parts next year).

In any case thank you

Well, Tones has answered your question, but here's my two-penn'orth:

I agree with Tones about industry being a better bet than private practice - if you find a position in private IP firm, it would most likely be as a trainee, with a trainee's salary. In industry, on the other hand, you might find opportunities to use your Italian IP background. In Ticino, for example, with companies who target the Italian market. Or you could research Swiss-based international companies which are active in Italy. There are companies which are active in developing innovative systems for civil engineering or manufacturing, for example, where the R&D and IP is in Switzerland, while the actual implementation/production is in Italy or other countries.

Sorry - can't suggest any specific companies who might be looking for IP people. It's really up to you to identify in more detail the sectors in which you have interest/experience, and then do some detailed research into Swiss or Swiss-Italian companies in those sectors. As a starting point, you could have a look at trends in the patent filings by Swiss companies who are validating their patents in Italy. You can use the European Patent Office's Espacenet search tool.

This research process will in any case help you a lot when you come to approach potential employers, because you will have accumulated some useful knowledge about their market, their technology and their competitors' technology.

By the way, jacek made some good suggestions (see above).
