Advice how to land a Job in Pharma?

HI everyone

A friend of mine is turning 34 and finishing upher PhD from the Biozentrum and is looking for a job in pharma. She is unable to get an interview eventhough she is open to all sort of jobs: Regulatory, Clinics etc etc..

Any advice how to get closer?

Thanks

Re: Advice how to land a Job in Pharma?

Common entry points include internships (but these are highly sought after and few and far between) or getting a job with a CRO (contract research organisation). CROs like Paraxel, Quintiles etc.. provide their services to Pharma and its not uncommon for their employees to go on to join the pharma companies they were serving. Certainly in my day CROs were seen as a stepping stone to bigger and better things.

Another avenue is smaller pharma companies who deal in OTC or generic drugs. They may not be as glamorous or well paid as big Pharma jobs but usually you will be exposed to a lot more varied types of work and it shouldn't hamper your chances of moving on to big Pharma.

If she hasn't already got a LinkedIn account, advise her to open one and start maintaining it since its increasingly being used by recruiters to initially screen individuals. Its also an important way of building a network.

P.S The most important thing is humility, having a PhD means diddly squat when you have no experience and I have lost count of the number of PhDs I've interviewed who've just wanted to gush about their research and how brilliant they are.

Pharma like other sectors are outsourcing, so a lot of re-org going on, many people trying to switch to safer roles. I think she needs to network, try to get invited to some events. Publish, contact people in the area she is interested in to review or gather research. After a PhD she should not just look for a job, she should be looking for a career.

Lot's of pharma companies are opening in Ireland at the moment. She may have to consider a couple of years out of Switzerland, do some leading edge work and come back as an expert. The transition from Uni to work appears to be more difficult, unless you have done your PhD in partnership with a company.

HTH

plus the "any kind of job" approach is maybe not the right one.

I would say allied entry points are: Clinical, Regulatory, Safety or Medical Writing (in some companies there may be overlap). Stick to those if you have a biological sciences preference.
