Work speaking English, Russian and Polish but not German (Basel)

The girlfriend (Polish) is going to be moving over to join me at some point in the next month and we're going to have to start seriously looking to find her a job.

She's a recent uni graduate in the UK with a degree in Business Management and Russian and is fully fluent in English, Polish and Russian. She's always wanted to work in an environment where she can use these languages and has some past experience working in Admin roles but is quite happy to give anything a try.

She's started learning German and will probably pick it up pretty quickly but for now she's still very much a beginner.

We're looking for options to get her into work, especially jobs that would use her other languages, any ideas?

We thought of maybe places like the Airport or University or on the customer service teams for one of the bigger companies in the area.

The other option we thought of was an unpaid or low paid internship, is there anywhere special we can look for these?

Re: Work speaking English, Russian and Polish but not German (Basel)

On that job level, finding a job without speaking German is extremely difficult. You can survive on English alone as a senior exec or something, but usually not on entry-level jobs.

Most customer-facing role are out of the question without decent knowledge of German (at least B2, probably even C1). That inclues support/admin/business-related jobs at the airport - or at least I couldn't think of any that wouldn't require some contact with customers.

University - not sure. What would she want to do there?

There is no such thing as an unpaid internship in Switzerland (or rather if there is, it's illegal). Interns must be paid, though needless to say it's usually not much.

It might be possible to find an admin job or so in a very international team in one of the big pharmas, as they typically operate mainly in English rather than German, but such jobs are rare and not readily available.

If I were you, I'd get in touch with some of the larger recruitment agencies, Manpower, Kelly, Adecco and the like. Some of them work with/for the large corporations in Basel and might have further insight and a few job opportunities.

Re: Work speaking English, Russian and Polish but not German (Basel)

I work in a multinational. Currently, I can right now hear conversations in English, Polish and German. The common language is English. Even "lower" level jobs don't always have German speakers in them.

Probably something to do with Polish offices opening in the last few years.

Re: Work speaking English, Russian and Polish but not German (Basel)

Surprising replies... you are going sideways forgetting her most marketable skill: Russian language.

There are plenty of well-off Russians who do business, live part or full-time or just take holidays in Western Europe.

Switzerland is one of their preferred places.

Not many Russians are fluent in foreign languages and not many people in Western Europe are fluent in Russian. And then most of Russian-speakers are non-EU citizens (visa issues).

She should definitely focus on Russian companies with interests or offices in Russia or Swiss or international companies with Russian customers. There are plenty of them!. More likely in Zurich or Geneva.

Try russian companies in Zug, i.e. Gazprom.
