RAV: self-employment and Language Courses

Yup.
I'm still playing the game down at the RAV and in order to a) avoid banging my head against the desk and b) let fellow RAV sufferers know they aren't alone here is a small recap of the current state of play:

My RAV advisor announced at my first meeting "there are no jobs in your industry anymore (banking!), we cannot help you in any way".

He then got progressively bored of discussing his Florida holidays over the follwing couple of months, and pushed me very hard to apply for the 4 months break to launch my own business. I went away and put together a pretty impressive (though I say it myself) biz plan, of a somewhat ambitious project. It got signed off by HQ in Schwyz and for 4 months I didn't have to send back the dreaded job search form.

However, despite working with some 18 companies to put everything together to put the biz in motion, some quiet time over Xmas meant that I didn't hit their deadline of end of Jan to launch. I asked nicely for a further extension (it's officially 2m + 2m) and simply got sent the same letter again with the expiry date highlighted in pink... thanks.
I pointed out I'm not trying to open a Florists on the corner of Pfaffikon highstreet, but something that is immensely more complex and I'm dependant on other decision makers. But no dice.

So I'm given the choice "sign a document to confirm you have completely abandoned the previous project and will do no further work on it (and cut all my ties suddenly with companies like KPMG/Credit Suisse/ E+Y/Soc Gen who have invested large amounts of their time and effort in this... yeah that's going to do my future prospects loads of good) and you can return to the RAV or we wish you luck with your new venture and no more money from us".

Not being in a financial position where I can afford to take the latter option, I'm being forced to officially abandon all my work for the last 4 months. (can you guess if I am really going to do that?)

So I'm back to the RAV. No longer allowed to travel (which is going to make things a bit difficult given the new business would be Ireland/UK and German based) And to make things even better, without having any clue as to the standard of my German, they've decreed I will be spending all my Weds and Fridays for the next 8 weeks on a language course.

Now I'm not ungrateful that they are making an effort to make me more employable, but I passed the German interview for my permanent residency without any trouble so I'm a little unsure what I'll gain in 13 days of lessons or what level course they are sending me on (not specified at all on the letter)

Did I mention that the language school has 2 branches? One that is a 10 min train ride from home, next door to my RAV, the other 1h30 train ride away.... no prizes for guessing which one I have to be at at 8.15 every Weds and Friday?

Oh, and I've got a huge potential investor flying in from NY on the day of my first lesson... not something I can move... so going to end in tears I think.... and knowing the RAV, probably the tears of my wallet.

Anyone managed to postpone courses without fines? Or any idea what level it's likely to be set at?? My RAV advisor is fluent in English so he's never heard me speak German at all...

Cheers

Yes, do some paid work on that day.

Sadly might be tough to prove I was in gainful employment if I'm in meetings all day that particular day...

Is it not as simple as you just skipping a day, losing a day's RAV pay (tell them in advance) and then carrying on as normal?

Well I hope so, yes... but given it's a day of interviews... kinda feels a bit complex to lose a days pay each time I have an interview on a Weds or Friday for the next 8 weeks....

Diahrea always is a nice option, nobody likes talking about it. Spot of dodgy seafood on Sunday......

Anyone done the "2 full days a week" German language course at Impuls in Ibach? Any clue what form it takes? Classroom? Small conversation groups? Or what level it's likely to be at? (If it's beginner level, I'll be slitting my wrists pretty quickly)

Stick it down on your form and tell your RAV guy and the school that you have assessments & interviews that day.... simples. That shouldn't dunt you money and will get you out of the tedium of the course for the day.

Hi, according to the law somewhere written "priority is to look for a job/business", you can definitely skip the language course on the day for an interview.

I skipped two days language lessons for interview on december 2014, just told my language school one day in advance, no fine, no issue. my RAV advisor is very happy that I skipped lessons for interviews

I think the fines are 3-7 days, but I believe interviews are acceptable reasons for missing courses etc.
