English speaking jobs in Basel area, advice re Recruitment Agencies please.

Good afternoon all

Looks like I've stumbled on a wonderfully useful resource here, so thank you in advance for any advice that any of you can give.

My fiancé & I are moving to her hometown of Lorrach in June, I am learning to speak German but not at the stage where I can work in a German speaking environment yet, so i'm looking for English Speaking roles in the Basel Area, other than the big websites like Indeed etc, can you recommend any Recruitment Agencies & any other useful resources.

I've been working in Print Sales with a Luxury Brand client base for the last 20 years, but i'm open to other Marketplaces, Industries & indeed other roles.

Thanks again in advance, for any advice from those who've already made this move!. Terry

Re: English speaking jobs in Basel area, advice re Recruitment Agencies please.

Also search the forum (upper right hand side of the Employment section) for English speaking companies, that may turn up a few more that aren't on the list.

Other general jobsites to try are:

www.jobs.ch
www.jobup.ch

Most of the ads are in French or German, but they do have some English as well sometimes.

You could also try www.monster.co.uk for jobs in Switzerland. Just change the location setting. You may have to try several times as sometimes it doesn't offer the possibility to change it, but it can be done with persistance.

Re: English speaking jobs in Basel area, advice re Recruitment Agencies please.

I'm in the same boat as you at the moment, just moved back to Basel after a few months of travelling and am in the lookout.

I find a lot of companies don't advertise on your jobscout24.ch etc but on the sites directly. Roche has a large number of jobs up but are all on their own website.

Syngenta was normally the goto place for English speaking jobs but they have had a lot of layoffs lately. Most jobs I'm finding are in the Zurich area which is commutable from Lörrach if you want to brave it. Schaffhausen is also doable from your end, Unilever has a big office there.

Good luck with the search, if you find any decent places in basel let me know lol

You might also like to order the book "Living and Working in Switzerland" by David Hampshire. It's full of useful info for both before and after you move here. You can order from your local bookshop or via the Internet.

Also have a look at www.ch.ch which is the official Swiss Federal website. Lots of useful stuff there, including on getting married here if that's your plan.

Re: English speaking jobs in Basel area, advice re Recruitment Agencies please.

My good lady in from Lorrach, just over the border in Germany, i'm just trying to show a little initiative & not rely her local knowledge, so although she's lived with me here in London for the last 5 years, we do visit very regularly. That said, i'll take any & all insight, so I shall seek out that book, this move is a permanent one not just for a few years, so I want to be fully prepared!.. This forum is proving to be an excellent resource, right across the board, jobs, housing & social, so glad I found it, the internet can be a wonderful thing!. You have a wonderful week & thank you again. Terry

You can switch jobs .ch to english, at jobagent.ch you can look for offers
in different languages.

Thanks Blackbird! I trie d that but when one switches languages the site only populates the same job and does not narrow the job list to the jobs for none-German speakers... Possibly best to contact head hunters... If you know of any I would love to know....

NewYorkerZurich, I see from your profile you list Sales and Entrepreneur as your skills. Unfortunately, non-EU nationals are last on the hiring list as priority is given to Swiss/EU nationals by law. The criteria for hiring a non-EU national is outlined here:

https://www.sem.admin.ch/sem/en/home...zulassung.html

Without fluency in Swiss language I can't see your sales experience landing you a job. What else do you have to offer an employer from the entrepreneur side of things? Do you have a university degree too? Even then, depending on what other skills/experience you have, speaking a Swiss language may be a necessity to get a job here.

While there are English speaking jobs out there, they're in the minority as English isn't a Swiss language. The more specialised your skills/experience the better your chances.

Re: English speaking jobs in Basel area, advice re Recruitment Agencies please.

Thanks for the reply. I'm indeed an EU national, I have Swiss health insurance, on a B visa and I have a diploma from an American Ivy league university.

I assume there would be head hunters that specialized in English language jobs... Couldn't find any online so if you know of any I would totally appreciate it...

Several years ago a recruiter in Zurich said that his firm categorically did not interview English-speakers who also did not speak speak German. Still, there might be something for a New Yorker from a sympathetic recruiter:

Re: English speaking jobs in Basel area, advice re Recruitment Agencies please.

Welcome to the Forum, NewYorker. Have a look at these stickys at the top of the Employment section for some more ideas:

[Swiss Job market] English-Speaking Companies

English speaking companies + Web Sites for job searchers in Switzerland

Most of the regular job hunting sites might let you do a search in English but the job announcements themselves will mostly be in German/French/Italian.

Make sure your CV is "Swiss style" and be sure to include your EU nationality so that an employer can easily see they don't need to do the non-EU hiring process for you. Good luck!

TBH, with over 100 applicants per job posting, recruiters don't have to work. They will not work for someone who is difficult to place such as someone with only English skills.

You need to get out and network. Go meet people. Then spend the rest of your time learning another language. Preferably German if you plan on staying on that side of the country.

Re: English speaking jobs in Basel area, advice re Recruitment Agencies please.

The jobmarket is currently pretty tight , if you don't match
the profile at least at 90-95% , it does not make sense to apply.
The companys currently look only for young workforce
(up to 35-40 sometimes up to 45 years old) in most cases.
Due to the fact, that switzerland has 3 languanges that divids
the country and english not an offical language, you have to
learn at least one offical language to improve your chances.

The age thing must be in specific sectors. In mine, it's full of grumpy old men and women. 40-60s. One interviewee recently was 62.

Re: English speaking jobs in Basel area, advice re Recruitment Agencies please.

If you are over 50 , there are not many options in the jobmarket, so you have
to stay (even when bad things happen). It is a problem in europe, not switzerland.
I believe the interviewee was sent by the RAV, when you look for example at jobs.ch
I found only 2 Jobs where you can be up to 60 years of age, a call center agent
and a dog handler for a security company.
