Postdoc position in Roche pRED

HI.

So I am in the final stages of interview for a postdoc position in Roche at Basel. I was wondering if anyone has advice about the final stage of interview at pRED? I have been asked to give a talk of about 20-25 mins and followed by multiple interviews.
Second question is, What is the average salary of a fresh postdoc at Roche?
I will move there early next year with my wife (who will search for jobs there). I have no kids yet. Was wondering if the salary is sufficient considering high cost of living in switzerland.

Best wishes
Nik

Welcome to the forum.

However, as a non-EU national unless you get a B permit, your wife may not be able to work here. If you get an L permit, which is usually what non-EU's get then there are restrictions on dependent permit holders working. She would need to have professional qualifications of her own for one thing.

Hi Thanks for the quick reply. So thats completely new information for me. Right now my wife has a job in Belgium. So I guess what you mean to say is if I get a L permit, which is usually the case, then my wife (who would come here on a spouse visa) is not allowed to apply for jobs even?

Yes, that would be the case. This from the Foreign Nationals Act:

"Members of the family of a short stay (L) permit holder (art. 26 OASA) do not have a right to gainful employment. The gainful activity is subject to authorization.

On admission, a request by the employer respecting the pay and conditions of employment customary in the locality and in the branch must be made. In addition, members of the family of a short stay permit holder (art. 26OASA) must have professional qualifications (personal qualifications, Art. 23 AuG).

The possibility of gainful employment for family members is related, according to art. OASA 26 and 27, to the duration of the authorization of the person granted family reunification. If the residence permit of the spouse is not renewed, the members of his family cannot claim a right to pursue their gainful employment (art.6, para. 2, OASA).

By constrast, members of the family of a holder of a residence (B) permit do not have a right to gainful employment. However, given the general objectives of the Foreign Nationals Act (better integration of the foreign population), the legislature decided not to submit gainful employment authorization."

If she doesn't have a university degree then she wouldn't be able to look for work here, the permit would be for residence purposes only. If she has a degree then if she can find an employer to make an application on her behalf and they meet the conditions laid out, then the work part would be added to her permit. If you get a B permit then all she needs to do is notify the authorities that she's found a job as B dependent holders require no authorisation to be able to work.

What I'm not sure of is whether a PostDoc gives you student permit or an ordinary one. If student then that will probably be a B permit. The problem is the quota limit for non-EU nationals, there are only 2,500 B permits issued per year, 4,000 L's, so the likelihood of you getting an L is much higher.

Hello,

I have exactly the same interview tomorrow with Philip Morris and I also have to present my self and some of my previous results during a 20 minutes talk. I don't think there are real advice excepted "be yourself". Be confident about your skills and never forget to demonstrate that you have important abilities required for a post doc such as leadership, initiative, resourceful or solution-oriented skills. If it doesn't work, don't care, you will probably find something better and life keep going on.
For the expected salary, I have no idea and I am afraid they will ask me this question. On the basis of previous hearing, I would say between 7000 to 8000 gross salary.

Good Luck

I like the coincidence of simultaneous interviews: one for the pharma and the other for the tobacco industry. One to feed the other with customers :D
good luck to both of you.
