Will RAV/ORP help me get a new job? (this is not about benefits)

Hi

So it's imminent that I get my termination letter. My company is closing business in CH and they want to relocate me to Spain, which I refuse, so they will just terminate my contract ASAP. I have 1 month notice so I will be employed until Dec 31. I started in CH in March 2015, so I'm not entitled to benefits, however I would like to know how I should proceed regarding RAV/ORP (I live in Geneva).

I'm already applying to anything I see I can be a match and also taking an intensive french course to have more options, I really want to stay and have some stability here, so I'm happy as long as I can work.

So, once I receive my letter, should I go and register with ORP? Will they also help me look for a job even if I'm not collecting benefits? Any experiences regarding this? (I have a B permit)

As I still have some holidays left and it will be xmas, I want to go to Spain some days but I want to know if there is any period that I have to respect regarding these registrations etc.

Thanks a lot!

Swiss Authorities Online (ch.ch) has a page on how to register as unemployed:

https://www.ch.ch/en/registering-unemployed/

Good luck!

If you have worked in the previous 24 months in the EU you will likely be entitled to benefits in CH, you need a minimum of 12 months in 24, not necessarily in CH. You insured salary is based on the last 6 months earnings.

You should go & see the RAV during your notice period & immediately start applying for jobs & KEEPING a record! You will be expected to be back in CH at the beginning of the new year.

Re: Will RAV/ORP help me get a new job? (this is not about benefits)

Hi!

I had no idea that it was possible... I've been researching and it looks it can be a possibility
I started working in this company with a normal contract in Spain 15.01.2015, then transferred to the Swiss branch in March, so if I can negotiate to have my contract terminated on 15.01.2015 I would have 1 year and maybe I can apply for benefits! I'm going to the ORP ASAP to get some info.

Before that I had an "internship contract" which doesn't pay for unemployment in Spain, so I wonder that period counts for CH (even if I have worked non stop since 2013, but with these internship contracts...which should be forbidden, but that's another story).

You just made my day. By the way I'm keeping track of all my efforts to get a new job, so it would not be a problem to prove that I'm already searching

Thanks again, any additional inputs are appreciated!

If it's not acceptable then get a temporary job doing anything at all as you only need a few weeks to qualify.

To answer the question:

ORP isn't very good at finding people jobs. They do have some listings but they are pretty much all blue collar and labor work. If you are a professional that is beyond apprenticeships and internships it's not likely they will find you a job.

Re: Will RAV/ORP help me get a new job? (this is not about benefits)

Hi all

In case this might be useful for somebody else in my situation:

YES, periods worked in another EU country for the last 2 years count for the time required to be entitled to benefits.

You need to ask to the EU country where you previously worked for the FORM U1

They will make the calculation based on the months worked in Switzerland, salary in the other country doesn't count.

And it's very important to start searching for a job as soon as you get the letter, so you don't get penalized.

Cheers

Re: Will RAV/ORP help me get a new job? (this is not about benefits)

Also following the original question, the RAV will probably not help you much finding a job. I was told in these exact words: "We are here to help those who *really* need our help, not people with higher education". Which is what Minimia said, but in a slightly less nice way... They also added "Why are you looking for a job, if your husband is working?" but that's a whole other story...

In the total time I was with the RAV (I received no benefits - I had only worked as a pratical trainee for 4 years on a row, which is the common curse of the modern architect - I just wanted help finding a job) I got from them 3 addresses to apply to (which I did). Other than that, it was just the hassle to have to go to their office every month, send the applications every month, for no benefits at all. I wasn't even eligible for language courses... My German was too good (thank you, I guess...).

In my personal experience, the RAV was more the "surveilance policing that you are looking for a job" and less the "let's give you a hand getting back into the work force". I hope others have had a nicer experience...

Tell me about it. I was an architect and got tired of the bad work conditions, then the lack of work at all, then the decline of the profession itself... for me it was a bad choice. I left it 4 years ago and I don't think I'll be doing it again.

Did you finally find something?

Back to the topic, OK, I see now that I'd better focus on jobup.ch, recruitment agencies and my own spontaneous submissions. Already working on that...

When my husband lost his job they weren't much help - but all the sites provided were really useful. As at foreigner who came here with him, I got no support... but that just speaks to their rules about how long you have to be employed in Switzerland before they even offer help. Good luck!

Who provided the sites? If Rav gave suggestions as to where he could look, I'd say that is help. If the list of sites came from somewhere else that's a different matter of course.

To the Swiss way of thinking it's logical really you know. With most things you are expected to put something in before you take something out. The RAV people have to be paid and those who are doing the paying like to think that folk who have worked and contributed themselves get help when they lose their job. Free handouts, whether it is in kind or in support are not high on the list of priorities of the 'givers'.

I was referring to the sites offered in this forum post. RAV provided him with no support finding a job. He also wasn't unemployed for very long, so it might be an atypical experience

And about free riding, I think this is the mentality of many government welfare systems- you have to pay to play. Whether thar makes sense is up for debate....
