CH -> UK? Worth it?

Hi there,

I know that this question has been asked several times in one direction, well.. why not turn it around for once Since there are quite a few Britons around, its worth asking.

After working for a while in Switzerland, I got approached by a headhunter from the UK, with a job offer over there (in Bristol). Since I've seen that its quite common to have the traveling direction UK -> CH, I was wondering how about CH -> UK

Salary wise its (as expected) less in the UK, from 55k GBP here to 50k GBP there (everything before taxes; after taxes the difference is of course bigger).

Is it worth it? I tried googling a bit, comparing living costs and such, but its always better to ask. Is there something similar to homegate / comparis in the UK?

My "Bauchgefühl" tells me it would be a marginally lossy trade, but well.. maybe I'm wrong.

Thanks for the help.

Re: CH -> UK? Worth it?

Exactly- the difference in salary is minimal, and costs in the UK (not in London) vastly less- so it is a great opportunity to experience another country and culture, polish your English, get more experience in so many different ways- great town, close to Devon, Cornwall, Wales, and not too far from London- great access to EasyJet and rest of Europe. Go for it and have a ball! You are very lucky to be given the chance without a huge drop in salary. You won't have to pay for health insurance either- and more or less everything (bar petrol and cigarettes) is much cheaper. What's to lose?

Well.. since there's nothing keeping me here, and nothing dragging me there, so its quite a good indicator to start.

I've never spent too much time in the UK, so its tricky to compare anything else.. that's also the reason why I'm asking here, someone who's lived in both places and could share some experience

Re: CH -> UK? Worth it?

I am Swiss and went to the UK for 6 months in 1970 ...

and stayed for 39 years. London and several locations in the Midlands. Absolutely loved it- but if your 'Bauchgefühl' is only about money, maybe it is not for you. Bristol is a great town, and great location- fabulous, I wouldn't hesitate 2 seconds.

Re: CH -> UK? Worth it?

There is really nothing wrong with having earnings as your main motivation for a move, though chances are you'll be taking a pay cut.

So if chance of scenery,,language, living in another culture, healthy state of your liver (if you do move to the UK you'll know what I mean) not a major factor then think about it this way: living costs might be a bit lower but so are the salaries, though it is really depends what you do, 55k is ok but not fantastic, but definitely above average and I mean general average.

Here's an illustration: http://www.contractoruk.com/calculat...e_results.html

Not sure about Bristol rent costs, but in London it will be expensive +-7500GBP in a WG, Bristol might be cheaper.

Anywhoo that is all I have during working hours.
Cheers and good luck!

Re: CH -> UK? Worth it?

Financially I would say that £50 000 will go a little bit further in the UK than £55 000 (CHF 85000) in Switzerland.

Taxes in the UK will be more than Switzerland.
See here for an accuarate estimate http://www.listentotaxman.com/
Taxes are also from source (PAYE- pay as you earn/QUellenstensteuer) in UK and are the same no matter where you live.
There is an additional tax called council tax. Probably about £1200 a year in Bristol - depends on size of flat/house, and which district.

You wont need health insurance.

Bristol rental prices are not cheap but are much cheaper than London and probably cheaper than most places in Switzerland. Cheaper than Basel or Zurich anyway though not significantly.

Shopping and eating out will be cheaper though.

Often for people doing UK->CH I have see people on here say that for an equivalent level of finacial wellbeing you should multiply the £ salary by 2 for the the required CH salary. By this reasoning £50000 would be equivalent to CHF 100 000.
I would generally agree with this. But it really depends on which part of each country since rental cost can vary so much.

Also worth noting if looking at appartments. In the UK the size of the appartment/house is usually done my number of bedrooms, not rooms. Nebenkosten are rarely included. You will likely have electricity, gas (heating), water, tv licence etc.

But you didn't ask that. You asked about the money.

Anyway, Bristol's a great area with fantastic national parks and coastlines within a shortish drive.
Bristol itself is a great place (it has a few dodgy areas but otherwise is fine).
I've always said that if I had to move back to the U.K, the Bristol area is where I'd like to live.

On the contrary there are 32 thousand swissies in the UK. Which is a similar number to the Brits in CH.

The difference is that the Swiss who move to the U.K. don't moan about it as much as Brits moving here, as they like it so much!

i have also been pondering returning to the UK, the job market there is better (for finance jobs) and the salary gap is not so big at certain career levels, also the GBP vs CHF trend continues to look strong.

Not to pick hairs but people from Bristol would remind you that it is a City and County and not a town The location is not so great as there aren't many other big towns/cities close by, but it is nice in its own right.

Re: CH -> UK? Worth it?

HI

I would echo the sentiments that have already been posted here - figure out what you would want to gain from the move.

£50K is a good salary in the UK - but it will put you in a higher tax bracket for the last 10k (£40K being the threshold). But you don't get taxed at all on the first £10k ish. It's a bit confusing but there's bound to be a diagram on the interweb. You'll also have National Insurance (NI) deducted automatically from your wage. Pension contributions are a further deduction - and what your company pays in varies.

No matter what you may have heard about the NHS, it provides good, free, service and private health insurance (if you wanted to have that) does not have to be as expensive as it is here. Obviously it's a sliding scale as is much in this life.

The cost of living is WAY cheaper - and fresh fruit and veg for instance is a lot less. There is also more choice in the supermarkets. If that's important to you.

City prices - and as has been pointed out, Bristol is a city - are generally more expensive but not as much as here.

I'd personally stay clear of London, but Bristol is a good bet I think. It's not that close to Devon/Cornwall though - about a 3 hour drive!

The public transport infrastructure varies dramatically from place to place and it is more common to drive everywhere but that shouldn't be a deal breaker (unless you don't drive!)

Happy to help with more specific queries if you'd like.

Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

Rufus

Exeter for South Devon is 1h45 mins straight down the M5! And Kingswear and the short ferry to Darmouth very close! And North Devon, Bideford, etc, is less than 1 hour!

Re: CH -> UK? Worth it?

LOL- did check with Michelin's itineraries. My niece goes to Dartmouth more or less every week-end from Bristol. And of course other beautiful regions are so close too, Somerset, the Cotswolds, Wales and even the Peak District.

If you like surfing, Newquay is the place to go, further down the North DEVON (later edit) (and not ...Norfolk coast)- awsome, as they say.

Re: CH -> UK? Worth it?

I love the Cotswolds - Bourton on the Water is close to perfection. And I know the Peak District very well. We moved from the Amber Valley in the UK... sigh... All rolling sheep, real ales and getting your wellies stuck...
