English speaking EA

Hi everyone,

This might be too specific and very difficult to answer, but what do you think the chances are of an Executive Assistant (with 5 years experience in financial services) getting an English speaking only job in CH when I don't have a residence permit yet?

Would they simply just go with a native Swissie with a fairly good level of English rather than going through the whole permit application headache? I do have a solid CV and speak 4 languages (including basic German)... But I'm afraid I know what you're going to say here...

Thanks!

Re: English speaking EA

Who knows. Depends what country you are from, which languages you speak and to what level, what area of the country you are looking to move to, etc, etc.

3rd country citizen: forget it.

EU citizen: possible but very difficult. The competition will be fierce.

Re: English speaking EA

You need to be fluent in the language at work, basic isn't good enough. As an assistant you would probably need secretarial skills, before any financial dexterity.

There are hundreds of qualified young Swiss ladies looking for such a dream job. To be honest your chances of landing such a job are few.

My daughter has such a job, she was born here, she has a Swiss qualification in business, and is fluent in 2 languages.

I have a degree in Business Studies, speak fluent French and Italian and five years experience as Executive Assistant at top tier banks in London - one of which is UBS.

I am currently interviewing with Credit Suisse in Zurich, I am at the third interview stage, so we will see. Fingers crossed!

Re: English speaking EA

Good luck, but why not apply to banks in Geneva, there are just as many.

Yes, it would make linguistic sense, but my fiancé is in Zurich alas!

Re: English speaking EA

Sounds like a good reason But as others have said, being an EU citizen is critical for your chances. Brits (you've mentioned London) are still EU citizens for the time being , but if you're from much further afield then your chances are very, very slim.

Re: English speaking EA

Your best investment in your career here would be to work on your language skills.

Even in an English speaking office, even in a MNC, even when working for an English-only speaking exec, German is often necessary. Precisely because an exec's German is not business standard a fluent German (with French, Italian, and a handful of other languages as well) EA is needed, the EA has to have the language skills that the person he or she is supporting lacks, that is a primary function of the job.

If you want to continue in this field here, working on your language skills will stand you in good stead.

Good luck!

Re: English speaking EA

A travelling EA may be a solution; the market is candidate friendly right now and there are so many HNWIs looking for someone who'll go on the road, all expenses covered. Not a bad gig but your home will be departure lounges and hotel breakfast buffets. Good luck at CS.

Thanks, I figured it was probably High Net Worth Individual or similar but not all of us are native speakers (although I am but I don't work in finance).

No, I'm not looking for anybody
