Where is best for English-speaking jobs?

My husband has been offered a job in Frauenfeld. We are currently trying to decide where to live. I do not speak German (but will learn) and will probably not work initially as we also have two daughters (ages 7 and 10) so I will spend time helping them with new schools, etc.

However, is there a difference in the job market that I should think about now? Are there more jobs in Zurich than in Frauenfeld or Winterthur?

I am currently a university administrator so I guess I would be looking for some sort of administrative job. Is that likely with very little German?

Thanks for any advice.

Re: Where is best for English-speaking jobs?

Honestly? Probably not. Excellent oral and written skills in a local language (or two) plus English seems to be the norm. You could try international educational establishments but again, fluency only in English may hold you back.

Also, with the school, system as it is, it's not conducive to both parents being at work as there are likely to be one or two afternoons per week when they are big at school, and they will come home for lunch. Unless there is a lunch club you can pay for. Be warned, child care is extortionate.

That having been said, good luck with the move.

Re: Where is best for English-speaking jobs?

Have you considered working for a British company while you live in Frauenfeld? With the Internet many jobs can now be done at home.

Purely English speaking jobs are still rare in Switzerland. Swiss universities offer some courses taught only in English, maybe that has raised your expectations?

In Switzerland most jobs usually require an excellent knowledge of the local language, plus good knowledge of another Swiss language, and then maybe English.

Take a look at www.jobs.ch

Thank you, both. I will definitely have a look at that site and I've found quite a few other job websites on this forum that I'll search too.

Not true. Plenty of English speaking jobs in Zürich. Obviously it will depend on the job sector.

OP, you should also search for jobs in Zug, many multinationals there.

Re: Where is best for English-speaking jobs?

Wouldn´t Zug be a bit too far from Frauenfeld? Quite a long daily commute that would be.

You can also check for jobs:

jobagent.ch
local newspapers
indeed.ch

If I remember correctly, there is also a stickie on jobs with "english" companies?

Nope - they are likely to be jobs where speaking English is an advantage (in that it will be extra to the two or more languages the other candidates already speak) but not purely English speaking/using. Plus OP expressly said University Admin - I doubt solely English speaking is likely.

Edit - sorry Sbrinz, hadn't seen your posts!

Re: Where is best for English-speaking jobs?

Thanks for the links; I'll have a look.

I mentioned University admin as that's my current role but I would look at other types of jobs/different sectors.

It does seem that fluency is necessary for most jobs, unsurprisingly.

Re: Where is best for English-speaking jobs?

While there are indeed international companies where English is the main working language, even in those companies an admin role often requires fluency in several languages precisely because that is what the execs/niche-skilled folks lack. The admin is counted on to fill the language gap.

My husband's company is one such. There are English-only speakers in techinical and management roles... but the admins all need English, German, French at a minimum, and most have a few additional languages under their belts as well.

That is not to say that there aren't English-only admin roles, but counterintuitively these may be difficult to find in an primarily English speaking company. In searching for those it might be a good idea to focus on the niche skills you bring in other areas order to stand out from the competition.

Wishing you all the best...
