Graduate Software Engineer From UK

I graduated this year from computer science degree in UK, got First Class with distinction. My first job is in London working on trading platforms development and algorithmic trading.

Having been to UK for 4 years, I would like to explore world more. In addition, UK leaving the EU is not a very bright prospect. I've been looking at Norway, Germany and Switzerland as potential new locations. I've made some attempts towards Switzerland, having applied to a startup in Zurich. I was not successful, unfortunately, but they did nor require German and when asked, said they get by without local language perfectly well.

I was doing some searches here and found that some members have negative outlook for market of software engineering in the country. Banking sector is outsourcing their dev work to Poland, etc. And contractors are finding it difficult to obtain rates as in older days.

How relevant are those observations to new graduates? I plan to work for at most a year in London and then plan my exit to mentioned countries. I would prefer Switzerland because German is used there, Austria and Germany, so I could learn the language. Norway is only used in the country, so it does not seem very transferable.

In addition, a friend of mine moved from Scotland after graduating from Physics degree to study at ETH and he could not be happier. This encouraged me to think about my own immigration. Can you guys share some information on how plausible is such a move? I would start interviewing with at least 6 months experience in financial technology software development.

Re: Graduate Software Engineer From UK

There are software engineering jobs in Switzerland. There are companies that wouldn't dream of outsourcing - <RANT> outsourcing only appeals to large companies without a grasp on how complicated IT really is, and, despite all the evidence to the contrary, think it will save money and increase efficiency. Outsourcing IT is akin to an individual giving control of their cerebral cortex to a 3rd party.</RANT>

That being said, it's considerably easier to find work here (as in most countries) if you've at least two year's experience and speak a local language. My advice is to wait two years and learn German. Brexit notwithstanding.

It all depends on your nationality. If EU then you may stand a chance, if non-EU it's unlikely with so little experience to back up your degree.

Hi, sorry for leaving out the crucial point. Yes, EU national here. I am well-aware about difficulties of visa applicants and probably would not have posted this topic here.

Re: Graduate Software Engineer From UK

You may have difficulty with the lack of experience - you'd get the same in the UK for moving to another bank. They will ask why you would move after 6 months, and you should have something reasonable that will convince them you won't leave after 6 months in the new job too. 2+years experience and moving to Switzerland will be much easier.

Anyway - don't be too discouraged - most banks here seem to work mostly in English anyway, as well as many smaller companies. It's worth learning German for a higher quality of life, ability to use services, friends, etc, still.
From my experience it was relatively easy to get a job here in a similar position to you, but with a couple of years more experience.

Hi, my main intention is to leave UK for Switzerland. Reasons are mostly: adventure, recommendation from friends who reside there, quality of life. I'm not into job hopping, it's just a time frame I have in mind and it coincides with me just starting off in the field. I don't see why it is an issue if I move countries for a job. It is perfectly reasonable to visit the country, fall in love with it and make plans to move there in the near future. If I would be job-hopping in the same country, then it could be an issue. But now, without even knowing German, despite difficulties it will cause, I decided to still make a move. I'd say there is not job hopping behavior here. I want to live in Switzerland and that requires me to obtain a job to support myself because same company I work for in London does not have an office in Switzerland, hence I am forced to change jobs.

You could try Google. They are currently ramping up their Zurich operations and their interview process will be a doddle for a recent grad who can regurgitate their algorithm design lecture notes verbatim.

It is not exactly a doddle. Their interviews are difficult. People spend months preparing for them. I spend a small part of my every summer day towards this.

Check out Digital Asset in Zurich and focus on small companies. Once you're here it's easier to find roles than when abroad.

Only thick people. Us clever sods just wing it

I've been in the IT industry for a long time. After a while you realise that there's an awful lot of people who are very good at interviews and not much else. It can turn you into a bit a of a cynic.

I doubt you would get past the first telephone screen. What did you do in the IT industry? Copy-paste engineering?

Shining wit surely. Google don't have interviews. Only screens. I'd love to see how long the average script kiddy would last in a bank IT environment.
