RAV - regular appointment - what to expect?

I'm probably being really dense, but I've spent the last half hour combing through the ream of crap the RAV gave me at my initial meeting and still can't find the answer.

What do I need to take with me to a regular meeting with my adviser? What is likely to happen during the meeting?

I already fill in my "look at how diligent" form and send it in at the beginning of the month, so do I need to take that with me, or do I just show up with a big smile?

Cheers,

DB

Re: RAV - regular appointment - what to expect?

Take everything you have with you just in case. It really depends on the advisor as to what they expect you to have, some are much more demanding than others. It's better to take things you don't need than be missing things you do.

Go in with a big smile and a positive attitude and you'll be fine.

Re: RAV - regular appointment - what to expect?

Especially your big smile!

Friend of mine brought the following:

his residency permit
CV
some references
what jobs he had applied for in the weeks prior to the meeting
what other activities he had done to search for a job

PS: Do not forget about the German lessons :-)

Re: RAV - regular appointment - what to expect?

In Canton Zurich, the standard RAV invitation letter for update meetings says to bring the following documents:

"1. Completed form "Proof of Personal Job Search Efforts"* (up-to-date)
2. Copies of application writings with the relevant job advertisements (and any responses from employers)"

* - this is the "Nachweis der persönlichen Arbeitsbemühungen" (the landscape sheet)

Re: RAV - regular appointment - what to expect?

Don't sweat it - they won't need or expect anything from you on a regular basis apart from your monthly Bewerbung form, which they will already have. They may ask questions about specific applications, and may ask you to bring copies of applications and replies, so if you have them in print form then it wouldn't do any harm to take them, but personally I never bothered - with everything done electronically it's not worth the effort on the off-chance they may want it, and as I say it's up to them to ask you to bring such things, not up to you to have it all with you just in case.

I'm assuming that you've already given them a copy of your nice shiny Swiss-style Lebenslauf and Motivationsbrief, plus anything else like certificates, references etc. If they've asked for anything like that to be sent do make sure you send it, or tell them if you can't find something, otherwise they may penalise you for it. But again, it's not something you need to take with you unless specifically requested.

Re: RAV - regular appointment - what to expect?

Nice one, thank you!

... which brings me to my next question: does anyone know where I can print off documents in Glarnerland on a Thursday afternoon, as my printer is kaputt?

(Life is complicated! )

ETA: OK, now I've seen Ace1's post, I can relax.

Thank you!

In civilized places, the post office has a printer. 20 Rappen per sheet and make sure to bring exact change.

Re: RAV - regular appointment - what to expect?

Can't you take the ancilliary stuff in on a laptop / tablet?

If they want to see it, you can show them, and if they want to keep it, you can email the relevant bits to them.

If it's actually a problem and they ask for stuff when you're unable to print it, they should (perhaps reluctantly) be able to accept it via email and/or allow you to print it from your laptop while you're there. Or at the very least point you in the direction of some facility where you could do so. They cannot insist that you buy a new printer just to be able to satisfy their requirements.

At one point I was sent on a Job Action course to polish up my CV to their (rather stupid) standards, and was able to use the course centre for printing things off for some time afterwards, as I too had no access to a functioning printer where I was living most of the time. There's always a way, and is their job to help you find it.

Do you need a printer? We have a spare one I was going to take to the charity shop but you can have it if you need one.

It varies from meeting to meeting. I usually bring along a couple of my best job leads for the month, which we sometimes discuss. On another occasion she spent about a half an hour going over the features of jobagent.ch.

And then last week we spend an hour going over the catalogue of courses they offered to see if there was anything that I was interested in. There was not, but to satisfy the powers that be we signed me up for three one hour sessions with a lifestyle coach!

As long as they are satisfied that you are genuinely trying to find work it should be no problem. So relax.

If it's anything like a bank, then they won't be able to upload from a stick.

I'd send it per email (pdf) if possible - that way you also have confirmation that they've received it - and you additionally have the opportunity to see how it's being received by potential employers.

Re: RAV - regular appointment - what to expect?

If the advisor wishes to practice English then you will have a general chit chat about life & where you want to go on holiday, with a general discussion about applications could easily run 30 minutes or longer.

If the advisor wanted to converse in German I was done in 5 minutes

Just take some recent relevant paperwork, which they really won't have much interest in, it just needs to exist.

Re: RAV - regular appointment - what to expect?

Meeting was nine minutes long, didn't need any documents, was just: "How's things? No, not till you're actually unemployed. Here's a job. Oops, no, that's from 2006. See you in September. Bye!"

So there we are.

Thanks all for the advice and reassurance.

Re: RAV - regular appointment - what to expect?

General attitude of RAV's goer should be very much like of the one, who is going to a job interview. The difference is that one needs to present all job applications in various companies, whereas at a job interview in a particular company... well one only talks about stuff related to that particular company in which one is applying for a job. Easy peasy.

Every visit to RAV was such an emotionally reach experience, and so much so educating, that I could count the blessings.
