Salaries are different from canton to canton?

Hey my fellow members !

I just read an article showing how much salaries vary from canton to canton.

http://www.moneyhouse.ch/wirtschaft/...ich-623623.htm

According to moneyhouse.ch, a pharmacist in Graubünden/Grisons earns on average CHF 4'200, while in Geneva it earns CHF 14'000 on average !?

A graph (that I didn't manage to post) claims that 95 % of all monthly wages in Zürich Stadt are between CHF 6'100-6'300, in Graubünden/Grisons "only" CHF 5'300-5'600, Valais/Wallis "only" CHF 5'000-5'550, Liechtenstein CHF 5'300-5'800, Luzern/Lucerne CHF 5'600-5'750 and Zug/Zoug CHF 5'900-6'200 (...).
According to this graph, VS, GR, UR and GL earn the least, while Zürich Land, ZG and Zürich Stadt are on the top.

Is there any truth to this? Are the salaries that different from canton to canton?
I understand one may earn more in the big and expensive Zürich Stadt, but are salaries in Graubünden/Grisons (e.g.) really that bad compared to other cantons?

Thank you in advance!

Re: Salaries are different from canton to canton?

Before you ask questions like this, think to yourself... generally speaking, where else in the world do the largest cities with the strongest economic centres have the highest salaries, while the other areas with weaker economic centres and less populace get less?

Answer: pretty much every country in the world. Zurich is the London of Switzerland, and wages in general reflect that.

You don't think CHF 4'200 in GR and CHF 14'000 in GE is very different? I don't think a wage for (in this case) a pharmacist vary that much abroad (?)

Salaries are not fixed, they are what the market can offer!

I think that is obviously an extreme example and I have no idea how accurate it is, maybe someone entered BS statistics, but the principle behind why big cities like Zurich have higher salaries vs backwater towns remains and is rather obvious.

I very strongly doubt the accuracy of that particular comparison. Almost certainly, they're not comparing apples with apples (e.g. retail pharmacists with retail pharmacists). And I doubt any "regular" retail pharmacist in Switzerland earns CHF 168,000 to 182,000 p.a.

What is Zürich Land?

Incidentally, the figures appear to be six years old, reducing the credibility of the article even further.

Zürich Stadt = Zürich City
They distinguished between Zürich Land (outside the city) and Zürich City in the comparison.

OK, I understand. There are pharmaceutical companies in Geneva, so maybe the pharmacists working there are also in this calculation.

Of course! I wrote that I understand workers earn more in Zürich City, I just found these numbers to be quite extreme, so I wanted to hear with you guys if these numbers could be somewhat accurate.

A new breakaway half-canton. Basel has 2 cantons. Zueri-Landers got jealous. So
Zueri-Land it is. Abbreviation will be ZL. Cantonal town Winterthur.

Re: Salaries are different from canton to canton?

These average salaries are probably calculated by user input (there is a link on the website to "lohncheck"). So I guess the data is not very reliable.

If you want to read about average/median salary in Zürich, you should the official statistics. The median salary in Zürich are 7696 CHF per month, which equates to 1200 CHF more than the average of Switzerland. A quarter of all salaries in Zürich are higher than 10000 CHF per month.

So yes, there are differences. But they are not as extreme as the one case you mentioned from your link.

They'll need to win a civil war first, at the cost of half a dozen lives. Otherwise it's just too easy.

Re: Salaries are different from canton to canton?

Yes. Salaries vary by canton.

As was said above, it is unlikely that the two pharmacists evening compared in the article are bout apples. The pharmacist in GVA could be an owner or working in a pharmaceutical company.

But I can give you a real life example:

My BIL worked in Lugano making 120k per year. He got transferred to GVA with the same company for the same job and his salary was raised to 130k per year.

What on earth are you telling people?!
1833 .... new?

Jealous?

Canton Zurich has "Bezirke" (counties). Which are nothing like the organisation of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Land.

There are also the terms "Zürich Oberland", "Zürich Unterland" but they're not political.

aarosaline, seriously, do us a favour ....

I suspect Pharmacist & assistant are being confused, there is a huge difference & a FULLY QUALIFIED Pharmacist will potentially earn several times that of someone qualified to sell toothpaste

Good grief. Please put your Swiss hat away for a second and recognise that this is the English Forum. Firstly, comprehension failure: the "new" referred to creating a new half-canton, "Züri-Land" -- not to the creation of Basel-Landschaft in 1833. Secondly, SOH failure: the whole thing is a joke.

1833.

I was kinda half-joking when I described the altercation between the two Basels as "civil war", but others apparently think of it that way too.

Hey my fellow members !

I just read an article showing how much salaries vary from canton to canton.

Thank you in advance!
Um, you do realise that as of December 2016 Geneva canton had a population of nearly 500,000 while Grisons which is the largest Swiss canton only has a population of just under 200,000. Of course a pharmasist is likely to earn more in Geneva - they simply have more clients/customers.
