Help !!! - How much can I ask as salary in Stabio

Hi,

I am about to have an HR discussion regarding one of the job offers that I had received from Stabio in Lugano. Can you let me know what is the best that I can get.

I have close to 8.5 years of IT experience and had offered the role of eCommerce senior engineer. Will 110,000 CHF/year is a nice offer considering that I will be taking my wife as well with me. After all tax cut which I calculated through neuvoo.ch, it is reaching out to 7120/month which excludes the insurance part.

Can I do a little bargain to something around 120,000 or should I be happy with 110,000.

Stabio is not in Lugano, it's 30-60 minutes away.

Re: Help !!! - How much can I ask as salary in Stabio

Sounds very good for Stabio.

Stabio is on the border, so living costs are much lower than Lugano, and plenty of cheap shopping just over the border.

My wife was living in Stabio for a few years.

I'd minimise my way to work. Stabio is cheap to life, this isn't Zürich where people life further outside to safe costs on living.

I don't think job opportunities are generally that great in the area, 110k sounds absolutely awesome - this isn't 110k in Zürich! In - especially Southern Ticino - prices have dropped massively. And you always can hop over the boarder.

With 110k in Stabio, I would dare to say you could life like you'd earn 150k in Zürich, if not more. (Unless your main expenses are for goods which have fixed prices)

And even if you like flying, living nearby Milano Malpensa, which has year-round cheap flights in premium cabins, you'd just pay half than flying off good old ZRH..

Re: Help !!! - How much can I ask as salary in Stabio

Thanks for the good feedbacks ..

Since I need to look for a job for my Wife... Can you please help out where to settle down.. Either in Stabio or in Lugano?

Heard people from Varese travel to Stabio for work. Is it because the cost of living in Varese is lesser. Can a Swiss work permit person can stay in Varese and travel to Stabio for work?

If you get L permits, your wife does not have the right to work here. Any employer would have to ask permission to be able to hire her and she must have professional qualifications, i.e. a university degree.

If you're lucky enough to get B permits then she can work without problems. She'd just need to take her employment contract to the cantonal migration office to let them know she'd be working.

Assuming you are non EU, your wife is not automatically entitled to work here, it depends on the permit you get.

And no, you cannot live in Italy and work in Switzerland, not as a non EU

Re: Help !!! - How much can I ask as salary in Stabio

Thanks again for all the feedback. From the discussions till now, what I had come to a conclusion is that

1. 110K CHF in Stabio is a good package and cost of living here is lesser
2. 110K CHF in Stabio is much like 150K CHF in Zurich
3. Wife can work in Switzerland if I will get B Work permit or above.
4. I cannot stay in Italy and work when I am getting Swiss work permit.

Great knowledge I got from this forum. Still some more questions just to get more clarification

1. 110K CHF in Stabio will be how much in Lugano. Should it be 120K CHF if I want to reside in Lugano?
2. From neuvoo ch site, I understood that 1bhk furnished apartment in Stabio outside the city centre will cost me around 1K CHF. Wanted to know in case this calculation is correct.
3. Since we both (me and my wife) will be travelling as part of this work, then how much insurance we need to pay. Is it minimum 250 CHF per person.
4. Is car really required to move around in Stabio or Lugano or Can I rely on public transportation.
5. Is it 13 month salary practice that is observed in Lugano region?.

Once again thanks for all the information

1. 110K CHF in Stabio will be how much in Lugano. Should it be 120K CHF if I want to reside in Lugano?
No. The company doesn't care where you live and if you choose to live somewhere more expensive, that is your decision and doesn't entitle you to a higher salary.

2. From neuvoo ch site, I understood that 1bhk furnished apartment in Stabio outside the city centre will cost me around 1K CHF. Wanted to know in case this calculation is correct.
on the lower end, up to 1400 is more realistic. www.homegate.ch gives you an idea of prices in that (or any other) area.

3. Since we both (me and my wife) will be travelling as part of this work, then how much insurance we need to pay. Is it minimum 250 CHF per person.
The cost of insurance has nothing to with whether you'll be travelling or not. Health insurance is mandatory, premiums depend on coverage and deductible. 250.- per person is low unless you have a ridiculously high deductible. Better expect to pay 350-400 per person.

4. Is car really required to move around in Stabio or Lugano or Can I rely on public transportation.
ask Tom

5. Is it 13 month salary practice that is observed in Lugano region?
The salary that was quoted to you is per year, whether it's paid out in 12 or 13 installments doesn't matter.

My wife was paying 1050/month for a 4 1/2, albeit unfurnished.

How many years ago? I honestly don't know about that area and just looked on Homegate earlier - with one exception, there's nothing below 1000 and most 2.5-3.5 are between 1100 and 1400.

It wasn't in the best neighborhood (i.e. it was 100m from the border).

Re: Help !!! - How much can I ask as salary in Stabio

Thanks everyone for the updates.

I had an official talk about the salary and HR mentioned that they can give only 90K CHF which comes to around 77K CHF of clean money. Considering 13 month salary, it comes around 6K CHF.

When I consider a rent house for 1500 CHF and Insurance for 2 around 700 CHF, I will be left with 3800 CHF. They had mentioned that I along with my wife will be getting a B work permit (which I believe that my wife can work in Swiss).

Let me know in case this package is good and can I try to fetch bit more. I am earning well in India with around 1500 CHF savings per month and my Wife also working here.

Decisions on permit type is made by the canton, the company makes a request but the decision is ultimately left to the canton. What is this company's track record for permits for non-EU citizens?

What would happen if it turns out that you receive L permits and your wife is not allowed to work?

What would happen if despite B permits your wife is unable to find a job?

Could you live with the current offer assuming a 'worst case' scenario wrt your wife working?

Switzerland, not Swiss.

They can't promise you'll get a B, this is pure assumption. It is not in their control. They can apply for a permit, but a) there is absolutely no guarantee whatsoever that you'll get one at all and b) if you do get one, it may well be an L permit first; actually, that's even fairly likely.

If you mean that you are currently actually saving the equivalent of 1500 CHF in Indian rupee while living in India, you'd be mighty stupid to move here for this salary. You might at best be able to save a similar amount (but that would require you to live slightly on the frugal side, particularly if your wife cannot work, which is likely) - but needless to say 1500 CHF in Switzerland go nowhere near as far, not even remotely, as the equivalent of CHF 1500 in India.

How and why did they go from 110k to 90k? Clearly they are not open for you to ask for more if they already decreased the amount offered.

In Stabio, yes.

Do all of your shopping in Italy, in my wife's case it was a 2 minute walk.

Some great bars and restaurants just over the border as well.

Thanks for the responses as they were really helpful.

With the current offer, I will not be in a situation to come over and work in Switzerland. I will inform the same to the HR and in case they are ready to negotiate further to more than 100K CHF, then I will again rethink this decision.

I think this is the right decision.

Salaries are falling in many sectors in Switzerland, even though prices remain high.

Lowering salaries reflects the reality of the economic situation many companies face, they cannot compete globally with Swiss labor costs and so must adjust.

But markets do not adjust across the board. Price adjustments lag tend to lag behind salary trends , it takes a fairly long time before lower salaries percolate far enough to affect prices... meaning a period of pain for those now earning less.

If you are doing well at home, coming to Switzerland at the offer you have on the table is really not sensible. You would be disrupting your family, possibly hurting your wife's career potential, for no real gain. Considering the uncertainty a nonEU person faces here, you could be kicked out easily, I would not come unless there were a significant uptick to your present financial situation to balance the risk.

The gravy train left Switzerland some years ago...

For some that doesn not matter, the motivation to make the move is something other than financial. But given the risks you face, think carefully.

All the best...
