Salary in Zurich

Hello everyone,

I am a PhD graduate in Computer Science (CS) from ETH Zurich. I am having some job interviews. I would like to know the salary range for PhD CS graduates in Zurich so that I can ask for the proper salary?

Many Thanks.

120 000 chuffs.
Anything less you will be living under a bridge eating frozen mouse droppings.

Feeling snarky today, sorry, but... how is it one can obtain a PhD and not manage to conduct basic research up front before posting a vague question like this?

Maybe PhD in query languages as he's good at asking questions

but apart from being sarcastic I second the question as I also have trouble assessing the salary. We know the correct level to live happily but what the market pays currently is another story. I got rejected from a few places just because asking for too much. What surprises me is that I have never heard here in Switzerland what was the expected salary. Why don't the employers negotiate but just keep looking for the perfect candidate which will also come in with the proper salary expectations?

To OP: In case you don't understand irony. 120k was a joke..

Without more context / information, we can't even make an educated guess.

A VERY rought estimate could be anything from approx 70-100k

For working as a cleaner maybe

Don't sell yourself for cheap. Silicon Valley companies start new grads at $150-200k total comp. If you can't find a comparable offer here, pack your stuff and a buy one way ticket to California where your talent is truly appreciated

Since you don't appear to be a troll, I'd say it's kind of unfair towards OP to make jokes like that since he might take them for real. A joke that I wouldn't even find funny (cleaners and other low-paid jobs are usually approx 45-50k per year) and I doubt others would.

There is a place for jokes (the infamous EF poverty line) but not in a topic like here where someone without any clue is asking for serious advise.

If some companies abroad want to pay double than what's realistic here in Switzerland, fine, go there. Just remember a coin always have two sides..

Re: Salary in Zurich

Some companies do pay such salaries here as well. If you want to work for twice less than what the global market is willing to pay, the joke's on you.

Re: Salary in Zurich

OP, I may be wrong but believe that what others are indicating is that as an ETH PhD in CS you should have had ample opportunities to suss-out the market in your chosen direction (whatever you want to do with it).

Either through your work experience here, the ample opportunities at the ETH, your professor...

I think we're a little stunned that you don't.

Since I am a PhD, so I did search on google before posting here but the salaries on glassdoor or payscale are sometimes pretty biased towards the lower side. So, i wanted to get some accurate estimates based on experienced people.

Trying one more time...

Hawklord, your education level is only one factor is what sort of salary you might be offered - and outside of academia, not necessarily a leading factor at that.

The specific industry, the position, the level of responsibility, whether your job is within a profit center or a cost center, how unique your skills are, who your competition is - these are the sorts of things that define the value a company might place on your contribution.

'Fresh Phd, Zürich' tells us almost nothing.

So if you really want help, a little more context, please.

Re: Salary in Zurich

A graduate student will get around 86k so that should be your base.
so something between 96k to 110k

Some places will value PhD more though but for most CS jobs it is not that valuable.

Well, I have friends, daughters friends, work colleagues and direct managers with your academic qualifications, but they are all working in different areas. If you'd like to be more precise, perhaps you'd receive some input.

Sorry about the less context.
To be a bit more precise:
Specific industry: IT companies like Google Zurich
Position: Software Engineer (mostly on research&development side for which mostly PhDs are hired)
Level of responsibility: Its R&D so it would deal with coding and research on stuff (my field is mainly AI/ML)
Skills: I guess i would say i am quite good with programming and also research in my field.

Can easily ask, but why haven't you done this with your colleagues? Expect that you've already been with Google here, London or wherever during the PhD? Am still confused.

Among my colleagues, most people went to US for jobs/post-doc or went in academia for professor positions so it was less probable.
Please let me know if you have any estimate for this details.

So you did a PhD in AI (artiiicial intelligence) and ML (machine learning) to become a software engineer in this area i.e. big data, analytics, and the broader waves of technological change which are sweeping through our world.

@ similar EFers in CH - are you keeping your salary expectations to yourselves

Re: Salary in Zurich

The SwissICT association publishes an annual survey of salaries, available at this link:

http://www.swissict.ch/publikationen/salaere-der-ict/

This is an example of survey results for an ICT System Engineer:

http://swissict.ch/fileadmin/custome...auswertung.pdf

Added:
If you can determine the name of the position more precisely, individual survey results can be ordered for non-members for CHF 50:

Re: Salary in Zurich

R&D in AI and ML in Switzerland is only Google really ,

Swisscom may have something. All other places are really software engineering or consulting.

At Google you could prob start at around 140k some senior senior SE there will get 180k+
