Friday thread: inappropriate behaviour by recruiter?

On the train this morning there was a woamn who I assume was a recruiter or headhunter. She was talking on the phone to a guy called Hugo who apparently was being offered a job as a scientist at Novartis and will be starting in August. What should probably have been a confidential conversation was being held ... at least the recruiters part of it ... in public and very loudly. Basically the whole train carriage was rolling their eyes and wishing she's shut up or at least lower the volume of her voice. Some of the things she said actuallay sounded as though they should have been pretty confidential. It also sounded as if she thought Hugo was some sort of an idiot.

Well, anyway, on behalf of the entire train, congratulations to Hugo for - apparently - landing a job at Novartis.

The recruiter was English speaking, I won't shame anybody by being more specific about the country / accent, but possibly she might be on this forum. If she is, next time, maybe find a more discrete location from which to make calls like that.

You should not be naming people who do not know that they are being named. As far as Hugo knew the conversation was private, so even putting his first name on here as well as his new workplace is just bad form.

In the interest of Hugo's privacy, that is not actually his name.

Then maybe easier to put that it's not his real name in brackets the first time you mention the name to avoid any confusion.

Re: Friday thread: inappropriate behaviour by recruiter?

As to the thread itself, it's a good one.

This situation could have made me walk over and ask the lady whether she is sure Hugo wants an entire train-carriage to know about this. And loud enough for Hugo to hear it.

Such a thing could/should cost her the job.
I think in future it is a good idea for me to ask people where they are exactly before starting a conversation with them.

Re: Friday thread: inappropriate behaviour by recruiter?

It's amazing what people will share on public transport. I've overheard one side of conversations of patients with their doctor, parents with a teacher (that one was a bit heated that poor little Hansueli* was made to do sport when he was sick), and all manner or shopping requirements between husband and wife / housemates.

Have these people never heard of Whatsapp??

*made up name in case anyone was wondering.

Yes! As I've posted elsewhere, my favourite, or worst, episode was being witness to a young woman telling her friend, by phone, all the details of who had come home to find which spouse of someone else with whom in whose bed and what had been going on at the same time on the other side of town, and what their various mothers had had to say about it all.

After 20 long minutes of her explaining the toe-curlingly intimate details loudly, while the passengers around her grew quieter and quieter, she added: "Das bliibt aber undr üüs, gäll?" (This'll stay just between us, right?), whereupon the tension was released by everyone bursting into slightly hysterical laughter!

As she realised what she had done, she blushed bright scarlet, and left the tram as soon as it next stopped.

Even when phoning via whatsapp, encryption only starts once the text is spoken into the mic.

I think privacy is just not en vogue anymore. The things I know about my neighbours - and their visitors They all babble their entire life-story outside, while I try to read in the garden. And they know I'm there.

On the other hand, I might be the other extreme. When a friend called the other day I said "I was gonna call you yesterday but the weather was too nice". Funnily he immediately understood, that meant I prefered to spend my time in the garden.

Actually I meant the texting bit of Whatsapp, rather than voice calls. There's not much encryption when most of a tram is ear-wigging about your ingrown toe-nail / tonight's rice bonanza / Frau Lehrerin's tournen woes.

Maybe next time, before August, when you see the recruiter, listen a bit more to get more detail so we can organise a nice reception for Hugo when he lands in Zürich: with baloons, flowers and a brass band.

LOL, I know you did.
Still, what better moment to appreciate our pretty toes?

What is rice bonanza?

As it's not Novartis and not Basel, is this Hugo?
She didn't even answer his legit questions then

There's an English chap who lives behind us, who conducts his business very loudly over the phone outse, and often laden with profanity. All I know is, if I wanted someone with his particular speciality, I'd give him a wide berth.

Yeah, sometimes one is tempted to shout accross the yard "no, that's not the correct way to do it".
